Angelina Jolie and Her Fabulous, Dirt-Cheap DressBy Vicki McClure Davidson
Back in June of 2007, box-office power hitter Angelina Jolie stepped out with beau Brad Pitt for her A Mighty Heart gala film premiere in New York, wearing a $26 vintage dress. The actress looked gorgeous, proving once again that you don't have to spend a fortune to look amazing.
Reportedly, Jolie told Access Hollywood that she found the elegant, crushed velvet black dress at the vintage store Wasteland on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. The story ran for several days on multiple news sources. Imagine—a Hollywood celebrity not being a wastrel! A few journalists took snide potshots at her for being "so cheap," but the majority applauded her frugality.
Although Jolie's dress was a frugalista's dream come true and every frugally competitive person watching was having heart palpitations over her jaw-droppingly fab score, the actress then teamed it with a pair of Christian Louboutin black pumps with crystal heels that cost more than $1,000. Sigh.
A big "A" for her high-five-worthy bargain of a dress, a hefty grimace and a big, fat "F" on the cost of the shoes. Jolie is a millionaire, after all, so maybe we'll excuse the shoes.
When asked once by an interviewer what she does each year with her obscenely huge film salary, she responded simply, "Save one-third, live on one-third, and give away one-third."
Awwwww. OK, OK, OK... so we couldn't be disgruntled at her for long. We promise we won't roll our eyes or fustigate if you go ahead and buy another pair of ridiculously overpriced shoes, Angie. You're still one of us, although obviously richer.
If you are ever in the Melrose area of LA and want to check out Wasteland (there's another one in San Francisco), here's a link to the fashion and style blog Steel Closet, with Casanovaruffin's review of the California vintage clothing store.
Even though Jolie can easily afford those confounded French pumps, I still can't get my head around the idea of a pair of shoes costing more than my first car. I'm venturing a guess that you may be of the same mind, so thanks to YouTube and WatchMojo.com, we're treating you to a short 2007 video below about the purported wonders of Christian Louboutin's exclusive and expensive red-soled shoes.
After watching the video, I'm even more convinced they're not worth it. For that kind of money, you could get two months' worth (or more, if you're REALLY frugal) of groceries. Or four months of gas. And, you'd still have money left over to buy a really cool pair of shoes.
Check out Style It Less, where there is an inexpensive look-a-like of Angelina's vintage dress. The look can be had for less than $100. Click here to visit the site.
