Herr's: Free Pennsylvania Snack Food TourBy Patty Mooney
Herr's snack food tours of their factory in Nottingham, Pennsylvania are free. It's a fun experience for the whole family and is a good place to go on a day trip, especially during these days of economic stress and recession. Herr's is also a terrific place for larger groups, like public school children, Scouts, homeschoolers, or church groups, to spend time touring the facility.
During the tour, you learn little-known facts, like how a pretzel gets its brown color, or what makes a great chipping potato, and how tortilla chips get their seasoning. Kids love it!
At the end of the tour, you get to sample the potato chips fresh from the line. After the tour, you can spend time at Nottingham County Park, which is about a mile down the road. The day after Thanksgiving, they display a spectacular drive-thru display of Christmas lights... again, no cost.
To celebrate the Fourth of July, Herr's has a huge fireworks display. Free admission (at least, now it's free while I'm writing this, but that could change), but it costs to park.
To go to their website at www.Herrs.com, click this link, or call their toll-free number: 1-800-63-SNACK (1-800-637-6225). They have helpful, detailed information about scheduling a free tour. They are closed on all major holidays.
If you don't live in Pennsylvania, I'm sure that there are similar free factory food tours in your area, such as large bakeries or pickle factories. Browse through your local phone directory for ideas and call around for information.
