DIY Recycling & Fashion: ThreadBanger
Video Demo: Back-2-Skool Special: Frugal DIY Ideas for Making Your Own School Backpacks, Book Bags, Laptop Covers, Pencil Cases, Book Covers, & Messenger Bags
Compiled by Vicki McClure Davidson
Wow—so many great cheap ideas in this video! ThreadBanger's Rob and Corinne asked ThreadHead fans and viewers to submit their ideas on making low- or no-cost back-to-school items. An avalanche of brilliant how-to videos from across the country were submitted. Materials ranging from stuffed animals, plastic bags, old blue jeans, duct tape, neckties, dinner placemats, and other "trash to treasure" items were used (most unusual was the Macpack, made from a MacIntosh 1988 SE computer). Jazzing up hair accessories is also briefly demonstrated.
While this short ThreadBanger video doesn't provide definitive instructions on how to make most of the school items shown, website locations with the instructions are provided and we feel that the brief visuals shared here were innovative enough to spark Frugal Café readers and get those creative juices flowing.
Going back to school doesn't need to set anyone back hundreds of dollars in school gear if you just use your imagination and dig up and use cheap/free materials commonly found in most homes. Personalized school gear makes a statement... that you're a frugal trendsetter.
