Justin Timberlake's Granny's Coconut Cake

Frugal Celebrities Recipes

Justin Timberlake has been in the public eye since he was a child — from singing at the Grand Ole Opry at age 10, to Star Search and The New Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney channel when he was 12, then as a young adult as the lead singer of the immensely popular boy band 'N Sync. The talented singer, songwriter, actor, and businessman has, so far, won six Grammy Awards and four Emmy Awards. Timberlake's debut solo album in 2002 after leaving 'N Sync, "Justified," sold more than 7 million copies.

The Memphis-born entertainer has been active in a number of charitable causes. He's ranked high in popularity and style polls across the world, and was named 'Sexiest Man' by Cosmopolitan and Teen People magazines. He's been linked romantically with Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, and Jessica Biel. Timberlake and Biel were married in October 2012 in Italy in a lavish wedding.

In 2004, Timberlake was performing with Janet Jackson during the Carolina Panthers vs. New England Patriots controversial Super Bowl XXXVIII half-time show in Houston when Jackson's breast, adorned with a nipple shield, was exposed by him ripping at her costume at the end of the dance number. While her breast exposure was for only about a half a second, outrage ensued about the exposure, which some believed to be deliberate. The embarrassing incident, referred to as a "wardrobe malfunction," prompted an immediate crackdown and widespread debate on indecency in television broadcasting. Timberlake apologized for the incident in what appeared to be sincere regret. MTV had produced the half-time show, and was banned from future shows by the NFL. Television viewership of that game was an estimated 89,795,000.

In November 2011, Timberlake was once again in the headlines when he escorted a female Marine, Kelsey De Santis, to her Marine Corps Ball. Reportedly, he was deeply moved by the patriotism and sense of duty he witnessed among the young Marines at the dance.

Despite the cringe-worthy Super Bowl incident, Timberlake appears to be one of the good guys in the oft-times self-absorbed, wasteful entertainment industry.

Justin Timberlake

People magazine's March 2011 issue had a section on "Cooking with the Stars," and in it, Timberlake shared one of his favorite recipes from childhood. A recipe he learned from his grandmother and that he still makes today.

In that article, Timberlake proclaimed, "If I have a get-together with friends, I'll call my grandmother [Sadie Bomar] and ask her for a recipe over the phone. I only bake her recipes!"

Easy recipe, but it sounds delicious.

Justin Timberlake's Granny's Coconut Cake

Prepare cake mix according to package directions, using two 8- or 9-inch round pans. Once cakes are cool, slice in half to form four layers.

In a bowl, mix together sour cream, sugar, and 2 of the packages of coconut. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Ice the top with the coconut mixture. Repeat with the next two layers. Place the last layer on top and cover entire cake with remaining icing.

Sprinkle some of the coconut from the third package on the top of the cake. Apply the rest to the sides, patting it on with the palm of your hand. Keep the cake in a cool place or refrigerate.

Bring to room temperature before serving.
