Weekend Food Conquest: Bargain Bin

Soon, Christmas goodies will start arriving at my favorite “slightly damaged” Phoenix discount store, Bargain Bin. But for now, I was pleased to find cans of beans (seasoned black beans, pinto beans with bacon, garbanzo beans, white beans, spicy refried beans, kidney beans) priced at 45 cents each. Even better, there was a “buy one, get one free” special on the beans. So, they cost just 22.5 cents per can. Huzzah! Perfect for casseroles, homemade Mexican dinners, soups, bean salads… Add a small quantity of rice, and we have a really cheap and delicious complete protein source. Other food finds included dented boxes of Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds cereal, marked at $2.50 for a 19-ounce box. It’s the family’s favorite as a snack, and with the kids being home for Christmas break, I stocked up. Normally, this size box is about $4.99 at my local grocery stores. Also found cans of button mushrooms for 50 cents each, Bull’s Eye Guinness Draught Beer Blend BBQ sauce (hubby’s all-time favorite – he loves it on fresh cooked broccoli, go figure) for 75 cents, and many other bargains. Overall, a rewarding day in the food jungle.
