Benjamin Franklin, Iron-Man Proponent of Frugality

Posted By on January 4, 2009

Benjamin Franklin has always been a hero to me. Not only did he invent a staggering amount of things that improved the lives of colonists (and many, like the Franklin stove, are still in use today), he was a prolific writer and also gave exemplary service in many capacities to our nation’s new government. But what we’re all a-gaga over is that he was ahead of his time on money matters: he was a strong proponent of frugality and critical of spendthrifts. Saving for tomorrow and not being a stupid wastrel were passionate subjects of his. Franklin had no patience for people who deliberately wasted anything (including their brains, as he embraced knowledge and couldn’t understand why anyone would choose to be ignorant) or were guilty of conspicuous consumption. He’d fit in just fine these days, wouldn’t he, as an Iron-Man of frugality? We sure could use him in Washington on The Hill right about now…

We have a new article posted in Frugal Cafe’ that gives some fascinating bio background on the larger-than-life man, as well as our favorite Franklin quotations on being thrifty, working hard, and the downfall of greed. Check out ‘The Frugal Wisdom of Benjamin Franklin: Insightful Quotations on Thrift, Hard Work, and Money.’ It’s mind-boggling what the man accomplished during his lifetime and that his legacy continues today, more than 200 years after his death. You must be sure to read in the article what happened at his funeral…

Benjamin Franklin is a legend, a hero to millions. Is it too late to be one of his groupies? LOL :)

About the author

I'm a conservative frugalist. My priorities: Watchdogging the government, making sure our tax dollars are spent wisely, living within our budgets (at home and in Washington, DC), and adhering to our Constitution and the conservative principles upon which it was developed by our founding fathers. Also, loving God, my family, and my country. Be wise, be frugal. God bless America!
