Over the weekend, I happened to be in West Phoenix and went to the VNSA (Volunteer Nonprofit Service Association) Used Book Sale, something I’ve wanted to do for years.
Sunday was half-off day (high five!), and even though the huge building was packed with frugal bibliophiles, there were still tantalizing amounts of book bargains remaining when I arrived. I went a little crazy, but am now well on my way to have a number of family members taken care of for Christmas. Most of the books I bought were discounted to around 50 cents to 2 dollars for hardbacks. I was quivering with joy, believe me, when I hauled my fab-but-heavy bounty to the truck.
One of the treasures I found and bought for just a buck and a half was Dean Faulkner Wells’ 1981 spiral-bound cookbook, The Great American Writers’ Cookbook. Amazing recipes (200 from 175 American writers), including one we are including in our ongoing Frugal Celebrities’ Recipes section on the Frugal Café main website: acclaimed author and poet Maya Angelou’s Groundnut Stew recipe. This unique main dish is really inexpensive to make, quite filling, nutritionally balanced, and a favorite national dish in many West African countries. Groundnuts, by the way, are what many countries call peanuts. Kids should love this dish, and it will help stretch your family’s food budget dollars. Check it out!
Update: I just checked out the Amazon.com used book section, and this cookbook is listed right now by five sellers with prices ranging from $10.95 to $25.00. The condition of my cookbook is very good, so I’m guessing my $1.50 outlay is worth at least $16.00, if not more. I’ve been thumbing through it and it’s worth every penny.
