St. Patrick's Day: Water Dyed Green in White House Fountain

St. Patrick's Day: Water dyed green in White House fountain

On the morning of St. Patrick’s Day, my morning news show reported that someone had “sneaked” (but I think they actually said “snuck”) onto the White House property in the dead of night and dumped green dye into the north and south lawns fountains. The act was meant to honor Pres. Obama, since turning the river green in Chicago is an age-old tradition on St. Patrick’s Day. My question: who in the heck “sneaked” onto White House property? Were the Secret Service distracted by leprechauns? Either it was a crafty WH staffer, or we have some grave security issues.

Huffington Post claimed it was Michelle Obama’s idea to add the green dye, and didn’t comment on the festive algae look. It turned out (according to my morning news show, not HuffPo) that adding green dye to the fountain wasn’t as “Ireland Forever!”-glorious as it was presumed it would be. The water in the fountains apparently looked algae-ridden—murky green in the fountain basins, although when light shot through the rising water, it looked less algae-like.

Politicians went wild wearing green (our POTUS wore a green tie), and First Lady Michelle Obama wore faux-fur-lined green suede boots. Sec. of State Hillary Clinton wore a shamrock pin. The Prime Minister of Ireland presented Pres. Obama with a gift of shamrocks.

Great read on the WH festivities: Jim Blazsik: St. Patty’s Day parties at the White House – Mr. President, please party responsibly!; here’s an excerpt:

Oh, and about those St. Patty’s Day parties – Foreign Policy reports:

“After the Gordon Brown debacle, you would think the White House would put a little more thought into planning for visits by visiting heads of state. But Brazil is already grumbling about the treatment of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who will sit down with Obama this weekend and is the first Latin American leader to visit the White House under the new administration.

No update yet on all the White House’s St. Patrick evening specifics (there was a reported abundance of green champagne being served), although Obama’s evening party was being reported as a “bash” or “blowout,” and not an actual “dinner.” Do “bashes” and “blowouts” cost more or less than “dinners”? And do they include wagyu steak appetizers?

A few funny accountings of Obama’s wacky teleprompter goof-up with the Irish Prime Minister (still trying to find the video of this – priceless!):
