The illegal alien situation in our country is growing like a cancer. It is getting out of control. Most American taxpaying citizens want it to stop, and it seems that too little, too late is being done. Except in Arizona, where Sheriff Joe Arpaio cracks down on crime and on illegal immigration in Maricopa County. Now, four Democrat officials in Washington, DC and the mayor of Phoenix want him investigated.
Arpaio has served as the county’s sheriff for almost 17 years, and has been reelected many times. He has worked in law enforcement and national security for decades, knows and respects the law.
He is passionate about keeping Phoenix and its outlying cities safe from the thousands of thieves, drug runners, human traffickers, rapists, and murderers illegally crossing the unprotected borders of Arizona from Mexico every year. The rapidly growing crime rate in the Phoenix area is alarming, and it is all that the sheriff can do to keep it from exploding. Phoenix is the lead US city for kidnappings for ransom, and these are now directly linked to illegal aliens coming over the southern border.
To most Maricopa County (legal) residents, Arpaio is a gruff local hero who is working to keep the county safer, opposes open borders in America, and works creatively to keep his jail operating costs down. To a handful of others, he’s doing his job too well, which has lead to insults and accusations from Phoenix officials and minority organizations that he is violating illegal aliens’ rights and that his department of law enforcers are racist, even those of black or Hispanic descent. The controversy about Sheriff Joe continues as activist groups and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon launch, what many Arizonans believe to be frivolous, vindictive, and baseless, investigations against Arpaio’s Sheriff’s Department. Last year, the mayor launched an investigation into the sheriff’s office about the legality of his crime patrols; the patrols were determined to be lawful and the charge dismissed.
This year, it’s an investigation into the civil rights of illegal aliens and racial profiling, backed by four Democrats in Congress that were rallied by Mayor Gordon when he traveled to Washington, DC earlier this year. None of them have ever lived in Arizona nor have been state government representives. All four are liberal Democrats. Arpaio is a Republican, by the way.
Those members of Congress are: John Conyers (D-MI), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), and Robert Scott (D-VA). Activist groups launched petition drives for the investigation as well, which included ACORN, an organization currently under investigation for fraud and political corruption.
Mayor Gordon has said that Arpaio bases his arrests on skin color and criticizes how he conducts raids and immigration sweeps. He told an activist group recently that Arizona is getting the same racist reputation as Alabama had in the 1950s. Gordon asked reporters of the illegal immigrants’ arrests in Arizona, “Why do they all have brown skin? I’m not kidding here, but where are the Canadians? The Asians? The Europeans? Why don’t we see them being paraded around like circus animals? He’s (racially) profiling.” Gordon said of Arpaio at another press conference, “His media team sells you snake oil with the promise that he’s the only one enforcing the laws. That would be entertaining if it weren’t so devastating to our community.”
Deputy Sheriff Paul Chagolla disputed Gordon’s characterization. Chagolla said last year his office cleared nearly 17,000 felony warrants, more than any other law-enforcement agency in the Valley, including Phoenix police. “There is no other agency that performs to the level that we do respective to serving warrants,” Chagolla said.
Shannon Bell of RightPundits.com wrote, “In the past 18 months, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has determined that over 16,000 inmates in their jail have been illegal aliens living in the state of Arizona. That number 16,000 represents about 1/3 of all inmates in the country who have been placed on hold after being identified as illegal aliens. Twenty percent of the inmates in the Maricopa county jail are illegal aliens, and of those some 70% had committed a felony. Sheriff Joe Arpaio makes no apology for the way he fights crime. We need more Sheriff Joe Arpaios.”

Below is a video of the newscast airing of the investigation results that Mayor Gordon launched against Sheriff Arpaio a year ago. Good grief, is this going to be a once-a-year thing, Mr. Mayor, like Groundhog’s Day? Rhetorical questions: How much does it cost taxpayers to run these investigations? What kind of information is needed before launching an investigation—is the complaint of 1 or more convicted people who have served time in Arpaio’s jail all that is needed, or must there be more compelling evidence? Or, can a unsubstantiated witch hunt be considered hunky-dorey if an elected official deems it so? We’ll keep an eye on this investigation.

From KOLD News 13 in AZ, March 30, 2009: Border Patrol’s horse division rounds up 80 immigrants, all from Mexico; when they put the immigrants’ names through their computerized criminal database, they found out that 21 of the men have criminal records.

I would rather be Joe Arpaio going thru hell and still getting the job done than the new mayor of Omaha, a Democrat, who, like most of the crap politicians in this country, doesn’t care much about illegals unless they can become voters.
Joe Arpaio doesn’t have to answer for anything; the new mayor of Omaha should be forced to go to the funeral for 4 year old Josie Bluhm tomorrow. She was murdered by a drunken driver illegal immigrant with numerous DUI arrests. The scumbag illegal will be deported; Josie will be entombed.
God Bless Joe Arpaio for doing his job. We keep re-electing him, so maybe it’s time the media started asking themselves who they think they’re fooling by publishing such trash about this man.
Love him or hate him, Joe Arpaio does his job and he does it well. He loves America and has taken an oath to protect and to serve, and that includes arresting illegal aliens.
If other law enforcement did the same, you’re right, kozanne, little Josie Bluhm would still be alive.
