Cuba, the Musical: CBC’s Fawning over Castro Is Naive, Nauseating

Any of you remember the songs from the great musicals? Like from Fiddler on the Roof? Brigadoon? Porgy and Bess? The King and I?

There was an electrifying number in West Side Story, that of newly transplanted Puerto Ricans comparing and contrasting their lives in America vs. that of their poverty-stricken homeland. It was titled simply “America.” The video below showcases the exquisite talents of Rita Moreno and the genius of Leonard Bernstein, performing “America” in the Oscar-winning film.

Here’s a blog reference to another American musical, Bye, Bye Birdie, written by Humerto Fontova, Cuban blogger, concerning the Congressional Black Caucus’s fawning visit to Cuba this week. The blog post is titled “We love you Fidel–Oh yes we do” sings the CBC:

“Not since Ann Margret’s reaction to Conrad Birdie’s kiss has anything been recorded to match these U.S. legislators’ reaction to these meetings.”

America is still the land of dreams, a place that rewards its citizens for hard work, that honors the individual, that promises freedom, liberty. Where the pursuit of happiness is guaranteed, although not the guarantee of outcome.

Under its socialist regime and ruthless dictator Fidel Castro, Cuba has not had much of anything to dream about or happily pursue in decades. Death of citizens, imprisonment of dissenters, loss of all property, nationalization of everything in Cuba. Cuba used to be a vibrant, prosperous nation, but Castro has been in charge for so long with his dictatorship, few can remember how it once was. “Try to Remember,” a song from the musical The Fantasticks, is befitting.

Shame on our CBC for painting Castro as “an old friend,” as the country being of Disney-esque prosperity and happiness, or as Rep. Laura Richardson (D-California) said in a press conference, a place that is beautiful and where the people are happy and DO have shoes and DO have ice cream.

Say what? Get a clue, Richardson!

Look beyond the guarded tour Castro orchestrated for you and the golly-gee-whiz CBC team. Look behind the curtain as Dorothy did in The Wizard of Oz, another classic musical. You’ll find something altogether different and appalling. It’s called SOCIALISM.

Or, hey, instead of having a lovely little chat with the aging but spritely dictator and his delightful wife in their “modest home,” how about the CBC get off their taxpayer-funded, overpaid, sychophantic butts and talk to a handful of average people living in Cuba. Then we’ll see if having shoes and ice cream are enough for the people in an oppressed socialist country where all hopes and dreams have been smashed by an iron fist.

Being polite is one thing, but they went past “polite” into “teenage rock star adoration.” What the CBC team said in Cuba and to the US press is an embarrassment. The obsequious drooling of the CBC about Castro to the press has been nauseating and frankly, naive. Bet if you had had crumb cake and coffee with Benito Mussolini, you’d be all a-gaga, too.

Castro is no Conrad Birdie, you morons. Stop the misguided hero worship and be Americans. Stand up for human rights, or is that a luxury you’ve reserved only for terrorists and dangerous illegal aliens coming into your homeland of the United States of America?

From Rush Limbaugh, April 9, 2009: “I can remember how, just 20 years ago, if Fidel Castro had endorsed you and said he wanted to do whatever he could to help you, you were finished; was the kiss of death. Not today.”
