In this day and age, it’s refreshing to hear about celebrity visits to our heroes in the war zones. A letter, a phone call, any acknowledgment from home is always appreciated. But visits by the USO and celebrities to support and entertain them is the golden ring on the merry-go-round. A few hours to laugh and sing and forget about the horrors of war. No American TV over there, remember? No nightclubs or amusement parks or video arcades, either.
Bob Hope, God bless him, visited and entertained our troops in the war zones for several decades. Born in England, Hope was passionate about letting our GIs know that we cared about them and that they weren’t forgotten. And he succeeded in his mission… performing hundreds of comedic performances, with lovely starlets and big-name celebrities, in war-torn countries. Hope didn’t have to do this… but he believed it was the right thing to do.
Pro wrestlers and NFL team members go over to entertain the troops often. David Cook, American Idol’s winner last year, went to Iraq and Kuwait in January to perform (I love that guy… a heart of gold and a magnificent, gravelly voice that melts me into a puddle of teenage-flashback emotions).
Angelina Jolie has been over to Iraq. Scarlett Johanssen and American Idol’s hilarious, blond country-cutie-pie Kellie Pickler (I think she’s been, or is planning to go), too.
When will more of the wealthy, self-focused Hollywood liberals like Sean Penn and Gwyneth Paltrow and other latter-day “Jane Fondas” stop bashing America, quit supporting illegal aliens and Fidel Castro and the myth of global warming and gun control and socialism and maybe, just MAYBE, support our troops? The ones who defend our freedoms and willingly give the ultimate sacrifice to our nation. Be more like David Cook and Angelina Jolie for just one week and visit our troops, or do something nice for a platoon. Send them cookies, send them DVDs, send them a letter.
Quit whining about how terrible our country is and actually do something that would make a difference to a soldier or Marine or deployed airman. Quit bashing America and embrace our men and women who give you the luxury of being able to freely bash it.
Be more like Gary Sinese and Jon Voight, who have been remarkable in their support of our troops. Or be generous like Lisa Hoffman, Dustin’s wife, who is donating thousands of dollars of cosmetics from her cosmetic line to the women in the war zone and wives of servicemen, through radio talk show host Sean Hannity’s help.
Pinhead, spoiled brats in Hollywood. Embrace and show support for our courageous men and women who give you the luxury of being able to freely bash your country.
Yeah, sounds too good to be true to me, too. The news of Hollywood celebs being troop supporters by sending letters or care packages or traveling to the war zones is substantially thinner these days. The days of Bob Hope and Carole Lombard, Ann-Margret and Donna Reed, Marilyn Monroe and Dinah Shore and so many others in Tinseltown patriotically giving of themselves and entertaining our troops in the war zones are but a dim memory.
With Pres. Obama supporting our presence in Iraq (downsizing our troop numbers slowly so as to not cause a quick imbalance – one of the best things I think Obama has agreed to do while president) and soon to be expanding our presence of US troops in Afghanistan, you’d think we’d know more about “feel good” visits from Hollywood celebs to the “theater” (aka “the sandbox”).So, I was surprised when I learned that the cast of the newest “sure to be a blockbuster” Star Trek film went to Iraq to visit our troops there. The mainstream media was too busy reporting on… on what? The pathetic romantic life of Lindsey Lohan? Britney Spears wanting to take her two little boys on tour with her? The “Octo-mommy’s” latest shopping spree? The Obamas’ new dog? Crikey, who knows.
There’s been no mention of the Star Trek war zone visit that I can find in MSM sources. Quit dropping the ball, guys, and maybe your readership wouldn’t continue to tank. Military families read newspapers, dontcha know, as do millions of military supporters.
A plug for our courageous military a few times a week would go a long way. You do it for welfare recipients and criminals, why not our military? Stop running Code Pink stories, and readership numbers might stop plummeting.
Here’s the cool news item, per Army Times:
Troops get peek at ‘Star Trek’ | Army Times

Beam ’em into the theater, Scotty.
About 440 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines will get to see the newest Star Trek movie at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, on Saturday — about a month before its stateside premiere, Army and Air Force Exchange Service officials announced Friday.
The troops will get an extra treat at AAFES’ Reel Time Theater: The actors playing the new recruits on the Starship Enterprise will also attend — Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Nero (Eric Bana), Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) and Lt. Sulu (John Cho). Director J.J. Abrams also will be on hand.
The directors, actors, Paramount Pictures, the local command and AAFES worked together to make the screening special for troops, Roy Robertson, AAFES’ vice president of restaurants and hospitality, said in the announcement.
The movie, simply titled “Star Trek,” recounts the early days of the original characters, with Kirk and Spock starting out as bitter rivals rather than the close friends they would one day become. Kirk, a “delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy,” locks horns with Spock, who was raised in a logic-based society devoid of all emotion. On their maiden voyage, the young crew “must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind,” the news release states.
“Star Trek” is scheduled to open in the U.S. on May 8.
Kudos to the cast for making the trip to honor our troops, salutes and chocolate chip cookies to our heroic troops.
