Who Is This Republican Turncoat Dave Reichert, and Why Is Washington State Ready to String Him Up?

A commenter wrote on a previous post his beliefs that “his man” Dave Reichert, a Washington state representative and one of the “Turncoat Eight” Republicans (more accurately, RINOs) who voted for the Waxman-Markey global warming, cap-and-tax-Americans-into-oblivion energy bill, did the right thing. I’ve included his posted comment, without any changes or corrections, below.

My Republican Congressman Says Cap and Trade is Good for America.

And, he caught the Green River Killer.

Did you catch the Green River Killer?

No, no you didn’t.

You can hear his interview here.

Dave Reichert SPEAKS: says Cap and Trade will be good for America

He argued that the expense would not be what the Heartland Institute, Heritage Foundation, and Wall Street Journal were predicting. He argued that it would cost around $.48 per day and that we would have better national security, more nuclear, coal and refining capabilities, and a cleaner environment with the bill. He argued that the conservative arguments against were mistaken, and that Washington specifically would be better off even though the bill was imperfect.

And, he caught the Green River Killer.

Yeah, it took him a couple of decades, but better late than never.

I hear Fox was thinking about making the Series 24 about Reichert. But instead of showing 24 hours in a day they would have to make each episode a year.

Disjointed, non sequitur post, but at least the writer didn’t call me a string of four-letter words, which happens with regularity. I’ve not made it a practice to use a commenter’s comment as the nucleus for a blog post, but thought it made for a nice fit with Michelle Malkin’s post today about Dave Reichert.

Excerpt from Michelle Malkin: Cap-and-Tax 8 Watch: Dave Reichert’s rationalization

I’m hearing from many old friends and readers that GOP Rep. Dave Reichert in Washington state is in hot water over his cap-and-tax vote.

KVI talk show host and GOP activist Kirby Wilbur says the vote was “make or break” for grass-roots conservatives in the 8th district. Party precinct officers, donors, and volunteers have been flooding phone lines in opposition to Reichert’s vote. Washington state conservatives on Facebook bombarded Wilbur’s page with hundreds and hundreds of comments after last Friday’s vote.

GOP party leaders have tried to quell the revolt, but are only digging themselves a deeper hole. Kirby told me he received a solicitation from the NRCC signed by John Boehner asking GOP activists for money to fight Democrats who voted for cap-and-tax.

Insert bitter laughter here.

Back to the Dave Reichert fan’s comments at the top of the post.

How do you deal with someone who obviously loves his congressman, but is illogical and misinformed? Sigh.

My response, firm but kind, to him is below… don’t know if I succeeded in getting my message through to him, but that’s OK, because my main mission is to give conservatives more knowledge on how to present facts to fairly and factually counter and disarm left-wing extremists and their global warming bunk. You know you’ve “won” when they don’t answer your questions or bring up things that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Here’s the response I posted:

Mr. Reichert’s background as a diligent law enforcer is well known. It does not qualify him, however, as an expert on the economical turmoil and financial devastation that the Waxman-Markey cap and trade will inflict.

To echo your method of argumentation, MY senator is John McCain, a POW and war hero. He has called Obama’s cap and trade bill a grave mistake that will hurt Americans. This week, he said in an interview, “In its present form, which is cap-and-tax. … It’s really terrible, because I believe that climate change is real, I believe it is something that we need to address, and I’m sure that a lot of Americans do, but to do so with a bill like this? … What [the Obama administration is] doing is using cap-and-trade…to raise billions of dollars so they can spend money on Cash for Clunkers, you know, buying General Motors and Banks and the world’s largest insurance company. … So it started on the wrong path and now it’s just turned into, you know, it’s laws and sausages at its worst in my view.”

So, “your guy” caught a killer and “my guy” is an honored war hero and POW – that’s a stalemate. I’m not in McCain’s camp for global warming, but just using him as an example of the fallacious argumentation you employed.

You’ve omitted that there are thousands of scientists who dispute the existence of global warming. And there’s that pesky problem with the EPA suppressing information from a report that derailed or criticized the faulty data used to try to prove the existence of global warming. An investigation is forthcoming on that suppression.

How can Reichert confidently assess a dollar amount on the impact a bill will have on our GDP and the financial impact on all Americans’ energy use when 300 pages of it was added at the last minute on Friday and has not been thoroughly reviewed by ANYONE in the US House, including the Energy Czar, and 1200 pages of it has not been made available for more than a week?

It’s weird that you asked me or readers if WE had captured a killer like Reichert had. What kind of a question is that? Total non sequitur, as is most of your post. It’s illogical to ask when assessing the impact of a cap-and-tax energy bill. Not really sure what you were trying to prove with that wacky rhetoric. And being the subject of a proposed TV show about catching a killer is totally irrelevant to this topic.

You said Reichert said it “would cost around $.48 per day and that we would have better national security…” Impossible. Cap and trade is all about mandates, increased rules, and penalties to grab taxpayers’ dollars under the guise of protecting the planet from humans. I’m clueless how this has anything to with national security. And this $0.48 he cites, is it per person, or per family, or per household, or per business for gasoline, electricity, coal use, natural gas use? In a 24-hour day, that would be just 2 pennies more per hour. Did he conveniently forget about how this bill will increase the cost of EVERYTHING? After reading through a small bit of the bill, 2 pennies more per hour is utter poppycock. One new law in the energy bill is that homeowners must fulfill a slew of requirements and spend potentially thousands of dollars on “green improvements” on their homes before they can LEGALLY sell them, and homes must be inspected first by a new government branch (which I’ll call the Housing Nazi Czar, for lack of the real term) before they are GIVEN PERMISSION TO SELL THEIR HOMES. Is this Cuba or Russia? George Orwell nailed it in 1984 about “Big Brother” watching…

Reichert said he was right and Heartland Institute, Heritage Foundation, and Wall Street Journal are wrong? That is exceedingly arrogant, I’m afraid. I read the comments left by people who visited the website you provided me. Every one of the comments posted were highly non-supportive of his interview, and decried him for his naivete on the “big picture” financial impact of the Waxman-Markey bill. There was also mention about how he stumbled on ANWR, and one commenter said he flat-out lied. I didn’t listen to the interview… after reading the comments, I think I have a good idea as to what he babbled about.

Since Reichert said HE was right and Heartland Institute, Heritage Foundation, and WSJ are wrong, he would likely say that he knows more on this topic than does Steven Milloy, respected founder of JunkScience.com, who has scientifically debunked global warming as a hoax. Milloy holds a B.A. in Natural Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University, a Master of Health Sciences in Biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore, and a Master of Laws from the Georgetown University Law Center. He has also authored more than 500 articles or columns, many of which expose global warming as a hoax or science using selective or faulty data. How many science or economic degrees does Reichert hold? How much formal education on the subject, outside of politics, does Reichert actually have?

Reichert would also have to say that Dr. Bruce West, a distinguished researcher with the Army Research Office who has done extensive studies on the sun impacting our climate more than man-made conditions, is also wrong.

Tell me again why catching a killer makes Reichert a global warming energy taxation bill expert? And how did he determine that all these other respected resources and science experts are wrong, but he is right? With all due respect, Reichert is a Republican turncoat, and I have respect for him as a former law enforcer, but not as a member of Congress who sold America up the river by voting for this money-grab “tax the hell out of Americans” bogus energy bill.

  1. Steven says:

I actually think the comment author was being sarcastic in his / her support of Reichert.

    • admin says:

      Hmmm, could be.

It never struck me that way, Steven. His email address uses Reichert’s name and his IP checks out for living in WA, so I’m pretty confident that he is a big Reichert supporter. However, upon review, I see that you’re right – it could indeed go either way. Thanks for offering a different way of looking at his post.

Sarcasm usually only works when it is read if the reader is familiar with the writer’s style of writing or his or her ideologies, and even then, it’s a gamble. So, including /sarc or /sarcasm or something similar in the text helps out.

  2. Keep up the great work. This Country need you a million fold. These turncoats will pay the piper come election time, I HOPE. It has always been my stance when the citizens are asked/told to call your Congressman/Senator[s] it is a waste of time due to some arrogant and rude staffer answering the call always claiming they’ll pass the concerns on to the representitive, or they claim they’re really busy and cut you off.

These eight turncoats sold the American taxpayers down the toilet with their supportive Democrat vote [ what was their price? ] while being dressed under the GOP banner, not being in my district, the deck is stacked against me concerning my ability to vote them out of office. The sad part is it only takes ONE vote to stick it to the rest of us.

When you don’t know where that vote is coming from no one can stop it. If your not from their district they could care less because they know you can’t vote for or against them.
The rest in their district exclaim, time and time again , “My Congressman/Senator does a fine job” and the same IDIOTS get re-elected over and over again. Does the name Ted Kennedy ring a bell ?

The GOP better not give one thin dime in support of any of these traitors, or I will not donate to the RNC [Michael Steele] any longer and Blunt will not get my vote here in Missouri He’s on thin ice anyway because he is NOT a true conservative as he makes it seem.

Down here, talk radio hangs his record out for all to see. His staffer told me he supported the Fair Tax Plan. Go to Fairtax.org, they have him listed from congressional records as NOT supporting it. Call back , tell the staffer , they hang up with the slamming of the phone. In other words the staffer LIED intentionally to apease me on that topic. That right there cost Blunt my vote. But they figure “Oh it’s only one vote”. The staffers can’t even be honest with the voters, so I give up calling, being the waste of time it truely is.

    • admin says:

Well said, Chris! I totally agree with you. Concerning calling congressmen, I’ve had pretty good luck here in Arizona with talking with polite staffers. I know that isn’t always the case. So, if a receptionist is snotty or snippy, go another route, like faxing or emailing. Keep it up, keep it up, keep it up… if your representative is doing a good job, be sure to contact him or her to say so (we can’t always be hammering them, right?) I know it can be frustrating, but it’s for all of us… it’s for America.

Concerning those 30-plus Democrats who voted against the global warming tax bill, they should also be contacted (no matter your party affiliation) to give them a hearty thanks and thumbs up. The more involved citizens are, the less likely our elected officials will go against what the majority of a district or state want. For those out there whose reps voted for the bill (like most of the Democrats and the Republican Turncoat 8), they should be told of your dissatisfaction/anger/disappointment/whatever.

Silence is acceptance, silence means compliance. Do NOT be silent… our votes in 2010 is the most powerful weapon we all have to keep the clowns in Washington looking out for us and representing us.

Thanks again, Chris, for your input, and happy Independence Day!

  3. Al says:

the congressman from Washington should be hailed a hero for dedicating much of his life to catching the Green River killer. I know it took its toll on him. Having said that, his entering into office was a partial thank you for his accomplishment(s). Now that he is there, holding him to a high standard isn’t too much to ask. He not only represents his state, but the entire country when voting for higher taxes for all Americans.

    • admin says:

Excellent point, Al. His skills and tenacity were exemplary in catching the killer. But as you point out, he still must be held to a high standard as an elected official; his heroic skills back then do not give him a “free pass” now. His support of this bill goes against his Republican constituency that voted him into office, and he’s in a lot of hot water as a result for not listening to the majority of his voters. Senators and Congressmen often forget that they are there to REPRESENT the majority, not follow their own personal agenda and ignore/go against the majority. Many believe they are much, much smarter than those who elected them. 2010 will be very telling to these power-mongerers.

The Waxman-Markey “tax Americans to the grave” energy bill is based on junk science, leftist power-grabbing, and a lack of respect for the nation’s citizens. And to boot, the gazillions this is suppose to generate is only going to be able to resolve a teensy fraction of what they want it to. Nonsense and poppycock… it’s arrogance to believe mere humans can actually influence something so large as climate. Most of the bill is intended to make a handful of people and organizations breathtakingly rich because of their inside scoops into investments, etc. Al Gore, it’s been discovered, stands to make somewhere around $100 million as a result of the global warming bill passing. If it doesn’t pass, he loses money. Hmmm…
