Obama’s Welcome in Africa Not “Unprecedented”: African Journalist Nkepile Mabuse Corrects Don Lemon, CNN’s Shoddy Media Fact-Checking of GW Bush’s Reception & Dance

Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on July 14, 2009

African correspondent journalist Nkepile Mabuse politely but firmly disputes CNN’s Don Lemon assertion that the warm welcome Pres. Obama received this past week in Ghana was somehow unique and “unprecedented” for a western leader.

Not so. Watch the video:

UPDATE, NOVEMBER 5, 2009: This video has been yanked off YouTube. I will attempt to find a replacement. However, all sources that HAD this video embedded now are displaying the same “gray movie camera” as you see below, which means the video is no longer available on YouTube. This video removal tactic is becoming more and more prevalent with broadcasts that are unflattering to Obama. If you know of a replacement, please send me a note and I’ll replace it. Thanks.

CNN’s Don Lemon Caught Off Guard, Gets His “Unprecedented Obama Welcome” Shot Down by Journalist Nkepile Mabuse

Partial transcript of CNN report:

DON LEMON, ANCHOR CNN NEWSROOM: Nkepile, I was watching you yesterday on the “Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer when President Obama was arriving, and they were doing the dancing, and all of the people who were running up to him. For a western leader, I know when presidents come over there, they are usually warmly received. But for a western leader, have you ever seen anything like this? Is this unprecedented?

NKEPILE MABUSE, CORRESPONDENT: It’s not unprecedented. When President Bush was here, you will remember, in February, there were people who were drumming, there were dances, and President Bush joined some of them. So, it’s not unprecedented. This is a truly African welcome that is given to anybody whether they are from Africa or anywhere else in the world, Don.

LEMON: So, they welcome everyone. It doesn’t matter. That’s just part of how the people do it, right?

MABUSE: Indeed, Don.

Bravo, Nkepile! Media truth… of course, it occurred outside America’s borders. She must not have gotten the memo… which states that a journalist’s knowledge about anything that is not marginalizing or denigrating about former Pres. Bush must never, ever be uttered. Especially if it undermines Obama being “the first” or “the best” in whatever the topic is.

From Greg Gutfeld, Big Hollywood: Daily Gut: CNN’s Sour Lemon:

-Lemon is adorable when he’s miffed

-It’s always hilarious when a reporter’s assumptions aren’t met. Blinded by ObamaLove, Lemon overlooks the fact that Bush is pretty much a hero in Africa – ending brutal wars, giving tons of humanitarian aid, and most important saving millions of lives fighting AIDS and malaria (a disease brought to you not just by mosquitoes, but by your average environmentalist and his misguided hatred toward DDT).

-In sum, when it comes to Africa, Obama has some pretty big shoes to fill. How disturbing it must be for Lemon, that they belong to Bush.

The next video, from 2007, is just for fun. And the media was pretty nasty to Bush about it, as I recall. I think he and Laura are more fun than the media has ever given them credit for, joining in here with the Kankouran African Dance Company during a Malaria Awareness Day event in the Rose Garden of the White House.
