Sad that many read into it based on what Officer Crowley says happened and ignor or add to what they hear on tape. Crowley said Gates was loud and name called ( “race baiting”) and many now say that although Crowley should have left based on the tapes, Gates caused it to continue by race baiting. There is no indication on the tapes Gates was disruptive or loud.

The tape shows Gates was asked for ID, provided ID, was recognized as the resident, but Crowley BAITED him to come outside whereupon he arrested him. Who baited who.

Officers run into hard-core individuals everyday that make comments and jesters that are 1,000 worse than you or I would ever think of saying or making. For an officer to over-react to a public citizen who is simply angry of his demands while standing in his own living room raises questions about his ability to serve effectively in my opinion.

The media is having another field day in dealing with this whole issue concerning the Cambridge police, Dr. Gates and President Obama. It is what the media does. I do not believe that Gates was a victim of racial profiling. I do think that he was so offended at being arrested in his own home, that he over reacted and got himself arrested for disorderly conduct. The police were just doing their job by responding to a 911 call about a possible break in. The President reacted to his friend’s arrest without knowing all the facts. How many times in his life do you think the the Presdient has been faced with racial prejudice?

The way in which this incident went down is only further evidence of the fall out that occurs in the USA after more than 200 years of slavery and racism. Even today, racism abounds in our society, so having black people use the “racial card” can only be expected. They may not be right in every case, but it is understandable that they would “jump” to that conclusion when faced with police involvement in their lives. They have had to suffer in silence, but now with a black president, we will be hearing a louder voice from the black community. Given our issues with racial equality, how can we as a society expect anything less. Both white and black people in our society are having a hard time dealing with the whole racial issue. Black people are not just going to “get over it” now that there is a black president. And white people are not going to stop being racist now because there is a black president. So these incidents happen and hopefully it leads to a dialogue and a new understanding. It would be wonderful if the media could see the problems for what they are rather than blow it all up into a huge news story that just makes things worse.
