The Professor Doth Protest Too Much, Methinks… Prof. Henry Gates and His Tax-Exempt Charity Improprieties

Prof. Henry Louis Gates... doth he protest too much?

Prof. Henry Louis Gates... doth he protest too much?

Sometimes, that classic Shakespearean line from Hamlet Act 3, scene 2, 222–230, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks,” fits a current, real-life scenario to a tee.

Like now, with Professor Henry Louis Gates.

It’s been bothering me this past week that Prof. Gates, an educated, respected man who has done very well for himself and has a prestigious position at Harvard University, would have been such a hot-headed racist ass to the Cambridge police.

OK, I don’t know the professor, and maybe he’s simply a hot-headed racist ass to everyone who isn’t black or is a police officer.

But that’s not the impression I’ve gotten from the people who have known him and have been interviewed (although, no one who witnessed what happened at the scene has jumped to Gates’ defense nor disputed the police report). Prof. Gates seems like he could be a pleasant man who, although he has really jumped the shark and blown this situation into the 1960’s racial-profiling hemisphere, should also be fairly reasonable.

So why isn’t he being reasonable? Why the continued anger and over-the-top publicity from the professor more than a week after the fact? Down deep, this just hasn’t rung true to me, reeking a bit of contrived, race-card, show-boat antics.

The professor doth protest too much, methinks. Was his racist outrage at Sgt. James Crowley disingenuous, a smokescreen, a diversion?

Dan Riehl at Riehl World View wondered about that, too. And may have dug deep enough to discover something much greater than he’d anticipated.

Admiration and props for the intense investigating of this matter, when no other news sources were reporting on it, Dan. This information poses new questions about Prof. Henry Louis Gates and his troubling, looking-a-lot-like-fraud tax-exempt charity, Inkwell Foundation.

Here’s a small portion of the lengthy investigative post. To access links to pertinent documents corroborating the information in the report, go to the RWV website to read the entire piece:

A Gatesgate At Henry Gates’ “Bogus” Charity?
Riehl World View
July 25, 2009

Henry Louis Gates, Jr controls a tax-exempt, non-profit charity, Inkwell Foundation, Inc, that managed to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct support in one year, yet only gave out $27,500 in grants, the bulk of which went to Gates’ employees and Harvard colleagues. Also, as recently as September 2008, the Boston Globe reported that Gates’ charity was not in compliance with the law for failing to register the proper paperwork, despite the charity existing since 2005. The charge at the time was that it was “bogus,” as you’ll see below. In fact, the state Attorney General’s office told the Globe the charity was likely either inactive, or dissolved. Yet, documents below show the charity is healthy, wealthy and active.

Is it possible that Henry Louis Gates, Jr. was acting strange when law enforcement showed up at his door because he didn’t want the story below to come out? It may take a tax lawyer to answer that question, but based on this research, it can’t be ruled out. We know the press has questioned Gates about the charity in the past and gotten no response.

Acting on a tip and with an item at Instapundit in mind (much more at this link), I was curious when Joseph Culligan of Web of Deception emailed with a tip as to the home’s ownership. It seems Harvard does own the home in which Gates lives. But it’s also the address for his charity, see below.

…Harvard sent someone from the University maintenance department over to secure Gates’ house and/or fix the broken lock on his front door. How many people have an employer who’ll send maintenance staff over to fix up or watch over their house?

[...]

In September of 2008, the Boston Globe did an item (see second short item in story linked here…) claiming Professor Gates’ charity was not in compliance with the law at that time, in essence suggesting it was phony…

I’m guessing the mainstream media at CBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN will be reporting on this alleged tax-evasion revelation any day now about the good professor *cough, dream on, cough* being sure to keep up with their journalistic-integrity and dirt-digging/smear-attacking reporting they did so well on Joe the Plumber (even his private child support and tax information was leaked) and Sarah Palin (don’t get me started on that).

Also from Riehl World View:

I posted this before on one of the other threads. Gates went to Trinity College in Dublin to take part in their DNA genealogical tracing. They say he and Crowley are related.

To a cop this case was pretty simple and straight forward. He was arrested because he was disturbing the peace of the neighborhood and cops are “peace keepers” first and foremost. No race factor whatsoever other than what was the catalyst for the arrestee to become volatile. If I might say, I’ve been a cop for four decades and cops have moved so far beyond the race issue that it really doesn’t even apply any more. We’re waiting for the rest of America to catch up.
