Obama’s Beer Diplomacy: Gates, Crowley White House Meeting, 6 pm Thursday

Peachy-keen.
The date and time are set for tomorrow for the “bringing the races together over cold ones” at the White House. I can envision how this contrived, patronizing “teachable moment” will likely unfold.
Pres. Obama will be in his Harvard U element, chiding and lecturing with solemn intonation, a white policeman on the importance of racial sensitivity. Prof. Henry Gates will be poised to jump in and add his two cents worth whenever the president takes a pause.
Sgt. Crowley will be sitting soundlessly, frozen smile in place, during the whole uncomfortable ordeal. As he cradles his frosty glass of Blue Moon, photographers will snap thousands of digital photos, and the officer will be praying for it all to end so that he go back to doing his job… protecting Cambridge citizens from bad guys.

As for the choice of libation, Crowley likes Blue Moon, Gates favors Red Stripe or Becks, and Gibbs suggested that Obama will quaff a Budweiser, as he did at the MLB All-Star game.
I caught this blurb in the Los Angeles Times:
Law enforcement agencies will be watching closely for any sign that the president will favor his friend Gates over Crowley.
I hope my prediction about this “gaffe-tastic happy hour” exchange being a disaster is wrong. I really do.
But the events of the past week shown in news reports and press conferences about the “Gates-gate” race debacle and the emotional opinions of supporters in both camps don’t give me much hope for anything of lasting value to be accomplished. I anticipate more embarrassment and possibly, more racial division and law-enforcement disappointment.
Let’s pray that I’m wrong. I’d be elated to be wrong on this prediction.

BUT if this is true, ( and I wouldn’t put it past them), how can we stop them from passing bills w/ amendments that have nothing to do with the primary bill?
Nail them when they come home to their districts and tell them that you know how they voted on the porkulis bill, TARP. Ask them if they like their medical plan, pension, job, transportation on the tax-payer’s dime.
Tell them that they work for us, and we can fire them, and will in 2010 if they don’t listen to us.
Tell them that they are the public servants, and we elected them to serve the public, U.S.

The Ethnic Stereotyping Parable of Beer
So…
Maybe if we were to consider the whole “beer at the White House” (Breaking and entering) thing from Sgt. Crowley’s (Prof. Gates) point of view?
You never know, he might feel a little put upon, having someone of another ethnic background automatically assuming he liked to drink (break and enter) because he was Irish (Black)? Maybe even if he is standing in a bar (In the foyer of a house with a broken front door) when he gets the invite?
I mean, especially if he knows in the depths of his very soul and through the personal experience of generations of his ethnic group that there is a history of societal-wide biased belief that the majority of Irishmen (Blacks) abuse alcohol (Break and enter)?
What if the invite was really only an innocent one – the kind of invite that someone might extend to a working acquaintance (Perp) or customer (Taxpayer) while in the course of their job?
But what if then, as Sgt. Crowley (Prof. Gates) has been conditioned to look at such pleasantries as an insult to his heritage and his intelligence, he takes offense at the invitation to “have a beer” (Show some I.D.)?
Are we to then blame Sgt. Crowley (Prof. Gates)?
Of course not – blame the inviter, not the invitee.
Sgt. Crowley went to the White House because he was ordered… or in as much expected to go there to represent the Cambridge Police as well as other law enforcement agencies. He, like most law enforcement officers I suspect, didn’t think twice about it. Black and white relations is a lot different in law enforcement, we are so far ahead of the rest of the country we are waiting for everyone else to catch up. We respect each other, rely on each other to survive, watch out for each other and our kids and protect each other. We fight like brothers and sisters and are just normal people doing our job. Catch up America!
