9/11 Remembrance: Rena Sam-Dinnoo, Rest in Peace

Rena Sam-Dinnoo, may you rest in peace
Today marks the 8-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of World Trade Center I and II, The Pentagon, Shanksville, American Airlines Flights 11 & 77, and United Airlines Flight 93 & 175.
As part of Project 2,996, I’m honored and saddened to be selected to remember and give tribute to a strong, loving woman. Rena Sam-Dinnoo was one of the 2,996 people who perished during the horrific 9/11 attacks. She was only 28 when she was killed with so many others during the attack on the World Trade Center. Rena was working in Tower 1 when the mammoth building was struck by a plane piloted by terrorists.
From the family tribute page I found dedicated to Rena, there is a detailed description of Rena’s life, one that was joyful and full of promise. It describes an intelligent, hardworking woman who was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad. A young woman who loved her life, loved her husband and her family, loved her job as Financial Accountant of the New York Finance Center of Marsh & McLennan in the NYC World Trade Center.
Rena was planning on pursuing her master’s degree in accounting and she and her husband Andy were thinking of starting a family of their own, neither of which will ever happen.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Rena Sam-Dinnoo reported for work at the World Trade Center. Her family has not heard from her since. She is dearly missed by her loved ones: Andy Dinnoo, her husband, Clarence Sam, her father, Dhanmapee Sam, her mother, Gina and Lisa Sam, her younger sisters. May she rest in peace.
I will never know Rena, but feel that had I ever met her, we would have been close friends. She was vibrant and joyous and generous, a bright light that made others happy. The tragedy of her senseless, premature death will not be forgotten. Her death reminds us that life is precious, that none of us knows what tomorrow holds, so grasping with gusto TODAY is most important.
Euripides, the great Greek tragedian of ancient Greece, wrote: No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow.

“She was never a dull person,” Mr. Dinnoo said. “She is well educated, and loved to talk, really about anything.” He said that he and his wife had not seen much of each other lately because he had been away on business for the six weeks before Labor Day, and then she had gone to Boston last weekend to pick apples with relatives. “We went shopping together to buy groceries on Monday night,” he said. “Monday night is the last time we went out together.”
Rena, may you rest in peace and know that America still cares. America still remembers.
Still remembers the terrorism and horrific destruction brought about by hate-driven Muslim zealots, depraved Islamic animals in their quest to “kill all infidels.”
Rena, you deserved to live. Not be an obscure number in the roster of 9/11 murder victims.

This paragraph from Gary Graham’s Big Hollywood piece on remembering September 11 echoes the horror I felt eight years ago:
The images of those New Yorkers the next few days wandering the streets around Ground Zero with pictures of their missing loved ones, hoping beyond hope that perhaps it was a simple bump on the head and temporary amnesia that kept them from phoning home to tell them they were okay… These thoughts suck the wind from my soul.
