Sarah Palin and Ronald Reagan... both unfairly demonized and attacked by Democrats, both more alike than you'd realize

From the moment that Republican presidential hopeful John McCain announced his VP running mate, the Democrat party has been in rabid overdrive to bash, smear, malign, mock, attack, humiliate, destroy, and vilify the conservative Alaskan governor, former Gov. Sarah Palin.

Following Palin’s inspiring acceptance speech, Team Obama sent a team of lawyers and “dirt-diggers” (said to be, by some sources, numbering 30 total) to Alaska almost immediately to find any kind of scandalous, horrific information to use against Palin. They found a few people who were willing to exaggerate or fabricate juicy tidbits (most under the bogus protection of anonymity), but overall, the fact-finding expedition was a disappointing bust.

So, it was up to the fringe media to do the real dirty work, plus enlisting the efforts of a handful of angry, anonymous liberal bloggers, to viciously tear the woman and her family to pieces, using any lies or underhanded methods available. Using Levi Johnson, the now ex-boyfriend/financé and father of Bristol Palin’s baby, as a low-life, scumbag mouthpiece against the Palin family was another tawdry assault. On television, Johnston even talked about his sex life with teen Bristol… what a loathsome piece of garbage. Makes me wonder what Bristol ever saw in him. And, believe it or not, he is now a sorta-nudie male centerfold. Attacking Sarah Palin’s special needs baby, Trig, was another despicable low point in the fringe media’s war. No member of the Palin family was off limits… just ask late-night talk show host David Letterman or MSNBC. Frivolous, expensive ethics lawsuits lodged against Palin were rampant.

The liberals’ wolverine attack on Palin was a 24/7 effort, zealous and non-stop. Even now, more than a year following the VP announcement and 11 months after the election, the attacks continue. Some have even attacked her new book Going Rogue, which is amusing, since the book (breaking records in pre-sales) isn’t yet available to be sold or read. But the attack lives on.

Why? Because the Left fear her. Much like they feared Ronald Reagan.

Flopping Aces has posted a marvelous piece on Sarah Palin, extracted from Peter Heck’s thoughtful essay, Reagan in a dress. It compares Sarah Palin to Ronald Reagan. The similarities between the two are much greater and run deeper than you’d imagine.

Here’s a portion of Flopping Aces’ post, Reagan Would Be Proud:

Peter Heck, a public high school teacher, penned an articulate case of the mainstream media’s obsessive Palin bashing. Quite frankly, the writing is on the wall and it what it says scares the MSM.

Since the moment she burst onto the national scene, there has been an unparalleled effort amongst the so-called sophisticated elites to destroy Sarah Palin. Unparalleled, but not unprecedented.

In the 1970s, the dominant left feared the rise of another radical right-wing governor of a western state — you might remember his name: Ronald Reagan — and they utilized a full arsenal of tactics to try to slow his meteoric rise. Comparing their words and actions then to their current anti-Palin crusade now is stunning.

Of course the tone and actions of today’s Democrats are off the charts. I’m sure Reagan was not hung in effigy, nor was his personal contact information made public. But that was then, this is now. Hopefully, in the end, the result will be the same:

After all, everyone knows how the Reagan story ended: the annihilation of a bumbling predecessor, a clear conservative agenda that revitalized the American economy and ended the Cold War, a landslide re-election of embarrassing proportions, and a legacy as one of America’s greatest Chief Executives. Considering then the striking parallels between the “Gipper” and the “Pitbull with lipstick,” maybe the left’s deranged animosity towards her is simply born out of a fear of the inevitable.

More from Heck’s essay, startling similarities between Reagan and Palin and the Democrat Party’s attacks on both of them:

On July 6, 2009, CNN commentator Jack Cafferty summarized the conclusion of the mainstream media by stating that former Governor Sarah Palin, “won’t have the same impact if she doesn’t carry the mantle of governor of Alaska….she becomes…a thumbsucker.”

In a related story, on September 30, 2009, Sarah Palin’s memoir Going Rogue shattered records by hitting number one at Amazon and Barnes & Noble…48 days before the book even hits shelves. Not bad for a thumbsucker. To put it in perspective, at the time Sarah’s book catapulted to the top of the bestseller list, it didn’t even have a cover and hadn’t even been edited yet.

[...]

First, the media attempted to downplay Reagan’s intellect. They called him a buffoon, an empty suit, dim. They said this despite Reagan’s articulate approach to issues and his effective leadership of the country’s most populous state. Surely no one needs to be reminded of the Tina Fey parodies, the New York Times’ references to “Caribou Barbie,” or Newsweek’s declaration that Palin was an “ill-informed, inarticulate, shopaholic” to see how little has changed in the left’s playbook. They said all this of Palin despite her breadth of knowledge on key domestic issues like energy and her effective leadership of the country’s largest state.

The old media also denounced Reagan as unqualified. He was just a “B-movie actor” who spent more time focusing on campus athletics at his second-rate college than he did academics. That sounds startlingly similar to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria who wrote, “Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president,” and other left-wing media sources that scoffed at her degree from the “substandard” University of Idaho.

Reagan was the target of ageism (New York Times Magazine in 1976 proclaimed Reagan “too old to run”), while Palin is the target of sexism (the Today Show, Washington Post, and PBS all suggested Palin should be staying home with her kids).

Reagan was proclaimed politically dead after his term as governor ended (Newsweek in a 1971 piece called “Ronald Reagan’s Slow Fade” said that Sacramento would “mark the end of Ronald Reagan’s political road”), while Palin has been labeled finished after resigning the governorship of Alaska (David Shuster on MSNBC prophesied, “I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Sarah Palin will never recover from this….she has no future”).

Reagan was termed a radical (columnist John Coyne wrote, “Reagan seems somewhat out of step with the new political stirrings”), while Palin is called a right-wing nut (columnist Jonathan Alter lamented, “She is a far-right conservative who…thinks global warming is a hoax and backs the teaching of creationism in schools”).

Read Peter Heck’s articulate, spot-on essay in its entirety. If you’re a Palin supporter, you’ll be glad you did. If you’re a Palin attacker, maybe you’ll be ashamed of the darkness inside your soul, glean a bit of humanity.

Then again, maybe not.

Memory Lane: Before the nation even knew her name, Glenn Beck interviewed Gov. Sarah Palin. This video is from that June 2008 interview where Palin talked about Alaska and the state’s resources.

Beck interviewed Palin on his debut TV show on FOX in January 2009, just before the presidential inauguration. As always, in this interview she’s a class act; despite the horrible way she’s been treated by the media and left-wingers, Palin still spoke from a stance of optimism, patriotism, intelligence, conservatism, and strength. God bless her.

    Excellent Post !

The first picture you put up made me think, what if we had had these two people in charge of this country right now ! WHAT A CONCEPT !!!

    Common Sense reigns,
    Patriotism reigns,
Intelligence coupled with Common Sense and Patriotism and the drive, and the Love of our Country will defeat the present administration’s aspirations to run this country into the ground economically, and demean Her on the world stage.

    Ronald Reagan is smiling.
    Sarah Palin is ready.

Amen to that, AFVET. Be sure to read the entire essay Peter Heck wrote on Palin and Reagan. I know I used an inordinate amount of his text (bad habit), but each paragraph he wrote was such a shiny gem, I couldn’t help myself. Believe me, there’s still a lot of great stuff in the full-length essay (I didn’t extract all the bon mots – Heck did a “heck” of a job writing it).

I was too young/self-absorbed when Reagan was running for president and in office to really notice the attacks from the media and Democrat Party. This really opened my eyes. And I was astounded by the similarities between the two. Excellent research job by Peter Heck… two thumbs up.

And to think the White House has the audacity to be whining about FOX News’ coverage… they’re going to shoot themselves in the foot over that one, I believe.
      :)

Admin, my wife and I were married during the Carter administration.
When America elected Ronald Reagan it was like a cool breeze on a hot day.
Both my wife and I realized that this was what this country needed.
Reagan’s philosophies are still out there, embodied in the the likes of Sarah Palin, and others that may be afraid to expose their feelings due to “congressional restraints”.

We, as the American People, will need to determine who is willing to uphold the principles of the Constitution, and stand up to the administration, to confound the direction the Obamas are taking our Country toward.

We need to gather ourselves, educate ourselves and those of us around us to be able to take our Country back from the soft tyranny that is evolving before our eyes.
