Frugal Café Blog Zone’s 1,000th Post: Dedicated to America and Our Troops

Zowie. One thousand posts and I’ve been at this blogging thing less than a year. The time went by quickly. And to sorta-quote our POTUS, I’m just gettin’ started, I’m not gettin’ tired.

I love America and I hate waste. What started as an occasional-entry blog to act as a companion tool for my main website of frugality and thrift ideas has evolved into a political and social commentary blog, although it’s still a big proponent for frugality. I saw America, my beloved country, being reshaped into something vile and unacceptable to me, something that ignored or altered the provisions of our Constitution and my conservative values, and within a short while, this blog’s core message shifted and expanded.

I want to thank all of you out there who faithfully read my conservative ponderings, snickers, and outrages about our government and contemporary society. I also want to thank the many fellow bloggers who have sent notes of advice and encouragement (you know who you are… God bless you!). The blogosphere is much nastier than I’d imagined, but because of the occasional kind word I’ve received, it has offset the vulgar leftist insults, violent threats, and two death threats I’ve received during the past 1,000 posts.

I’ve met so many remarkable people during these 1,000 posts. I even received a nice note recently about the blog from Ann McElhinney, co-director of the anti-global warming/anti-climate-change, Al-Gore-rebuttal film Not Evil, Just Wrong… now, how cool is THAT? If you’ve not yet seen this amazing, hard-hitting film that debunks Gore’s left-wing, erroneous An Inconvenient Truth, check out the film’s website at NotEvilJustWrong.com for information.

I dedicate this 1,000th post to America. My America. Your America.

I also dedicate this post to our thousands of courageous military men and women who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to defend our homelands and the principles of America and our founding fathers. Without them and their dedication, strength, and service, our world would be a far more dangerous place. Our troops and our military veterans are the finest in the world and we do not thank them often enough. THANK YOU.

You don’t need to spend a fortune… even a card or letter is appreciated. It lets them know we’ve not forgotten them, that America cares.

The past few days when I’ve been at that window upstairs, I’ve thought a bit of the “shining city upon a hill.” The phrase comes from John Winthrop, who wrote it to describe the America he imagined. What he imagined was important because he was an early Pilgrim, an early freedom man. He journeyed here on what today we’d call a little wooden boat; and like the other Pilgrims, he was looking for a home that would be free.

I’ve spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don’t know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That’s how I saw it and see it still.

And how stands the city on this winter night? More prosperous, more secure, and happier than it was eight years ago. But more than that; after 200 years, two centuries, she still stands strong and true on the granite ridge, and her glow has held steady no matter what storm. And she’s still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom, for all the pilgrims from all the lost places who are hurtling through the darkness, toward home.

      Z, you’re the ultimate master of off-the-wall wacky blog titles… and, I don’t think I ever congratulated you a while back when you were quoted on Michelle Malkin’s blog (I’ll admit, the green-eyed monster hit me when I saw that… the Holy Grail/Heisman Trophy of conservative blogging, dontcha know), so here it is belatedly, dear compadre:

    As a veteran of Xerox, and the Air Force, I commend you on number 1000.
    That’s a “Grand” in Vegas, and your efforts are GRAND in the blog zone.
    We all enjoy your patriotic perspective, and conservative philosophies.

    BTW, Xerox has always had a policy to hire veterans, and is showing their patriotism to this day. Hey, they hired me.
