Truth in Advertising? Disney Issues Refund for Baby Einstein DVDs

From the “truth in advertising” files… sometimes a company will voluntarily step forward and do the right thing.
In this instance, it’s the Disney company issuing a refund for a product that won’t do what it promised. Because they’ve determined from studies that DVDs in their Baby Einstein series are incapable of educating babies and toddlers.
From CNPANYU News:
If you are the consumer of Baby Einstein DVDs, you can exchange the DVDs for Baby Einstein books, music or a 25 percent off coupon.
Disney is offering a full refund of $15.99 to anyone who purchased a Baby Einstein DVD between June 5, 2004 and Sept. 4, 2009.
The Baby Einstein product line as an educational tool for children from ages 3 months to 3 years.
This decision seems to be an acknowledgment of the inefficiency of these videos. Susan Linn, director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood who has been fighting for years, had this to say about the refund:
“We see it as an acknowledgment by the leading baby video company that baby videos are not educational, and we hope other baby media companies will follow suit by offering refunds.”
From InEntertainment:
Following on from the news that Disney will now be offering refunds on their Baby Einstiein DVD products, it has now been confirmed that the company have also dropped the ‘educational’ tag from all further ads in the future.
As reported from WJBF, the news comes after Disney fell under increasing pressure from consumers who felt that the Baby Einstein products were firstly not educational, but even could do more harm than good for their children…
Research has since been proven that ‘television time’ is no longer educational for babies, and could even do harm creating health concerns for all parents and guardians.
According to Washington University, every hour per day infants of 8 to 16 months spent watching educational videos, including Baby Einstein, they learned six to eight fewer words than other babies not exposed to such videos.
