ACORN’s Taxpayer Funding Kicks Back in on Halloween… Congress, What’s Up with the “Trick AND Treat” of Our Tax Dollars? (video) Update: Funds Halted for 50 More Days
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on October 29, 2009
BREAKING: ACORN getting taxpayer funding has been thwarted, for now… Congress finally comes through, even though the Department of Justice has chosen not to investigate ACORN’s criminal and fraudulent activity:
UPDATE, October 30, 2009: Chris Berg, Big Government: ACORN — 50 More Days Without Federal Funds
When Congress voted to halt all taxpayer-funded dollars being channeled to that poster-child organization of corruption, ACORN, well, I guess most Americans thought that was that. Multiple investigations in multiple states have been launched as a result of the exposé videos produced by those young journalists James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles, plus other unrelated, earlier charges of fraud, embezzlement, all sorts of arrogant criminal shenanigans. Did we think they voted to not give ACORN our tax money, unless maybe they were cleared of all these mounting felony charges and pending investigations into criminal activities? Didn’t we all pretty much think that? Seems reasonable.
And when I heard a few weeks back that the funding would resume on Halloween, I thought, maybe we ALL thought, that by now, that “tricky” deadline would be squashed by Congress, that a new ruling would be enacted that the ACORN funding would stop “until further notice” or some such.
But, nope, we’d be dead wrong, pardners.
ACORN gets to gobble at the taxpayer trough again after Halloween.
Congress: Trick AND treat? Tricking Americans and then treating ACORN? This is outrageous.
Pond-dwelling parasites…

From Michelle Malkin, ACORN and friends diagram of the day:
On Fox & Friends this morning, I discussed the expiring House and Senate bans on ACORN funding that GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann has been warning about all month. Byron York has a good backgrounder here.
Whatever happens, the daunting reality is that ACORN and its vast network of affiliates continue to spend and shuffle untold millions of tax dollars in ways that subvert tax and campaign finance laws. And as I noted earlier this week, ACORN’s Siamese twin, the SEIU, is leading a new corporate shakedown campaign with a huge new list of ACORN-style subsidiaries.
Andrew Marcus further illuminates ACORN’s Working Family of Democratic Socialists. Print, save, and pass around today’s chart of the day:
You need to read this in its entirety… ACORN’s CEO Bertha Lewis is launching a huge smear attack against FOX News (and using OUR tax dollars to do it). From Anita MonCrief, Big Government: Bertha Lewis and the Campaign to DeFox America:
Bertha Lewis of ACORN appears to be tired of losing arguments, credibility, and government funding. With her “colleagues” at the White House behind her and the memory of being forced off her talking points fresh in her mind, Bertha Lewis strikes back.

Vicki: Posted on “Gateway Pundit” my recent exchange with Sen. Charles Schumer (D/NY)–at least I think he was on the other end of the line. I’m skeptical. Nevertheless, your readers might find it instructive to hear what Schumer says about this ACORN funding issue. Here, I’m more than skeptical.
Best regards
Stan S.

Well, Jim, the left’s political plot thickens. I wrote Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer (D/NY) just a few days ago, asking why funding to ACORN will resume Halloween night, 12:01AM. . . .
The opposition says this a “Republican rumor.” And the opposition to the opposition says the Congress “buried” in the “stimulus” money for ACORN. The good Senator himself gave me yet another take. Perhaps it’s a form letter sent by some Schumer apparatchik, since it addresses me as “Senator” and refers to issues my e-mail never mentioned. I did not write about the legislation he cites, nor say, in any form, “federal funding must be spent carefully and responsibly” (makes me sound somewhat like a milquetoast). My comments were more incisive; I did mention the nexus between ACORN and criminality. Here’s what he wrote. What do you think?

Dear Senator S—:
Thank you for writing and expressing your support for legislation that would prohibit the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) from receiving federal money included in the recovery bill and administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). I agree that federal funding must be spent carefully and responsibly.
You will be happy to know that the federal recovery bill did not give money to ACORN. In fact, if organizations such as ACORN want to receive federal funds, they must apply to HUD for specific projects and compete against other organizations for that money.
Moreover, in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Appropriations bill I voted in support of an amendment that strips ACORN any access to available federal funding.
Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me about this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can ever be of assistance to you on this, or any other matter.
Sincerely,
Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator
Stan, like you, I’m skeptical. But this does shed new light on the issue.
I’m usually pretty sharp about detecting “GOP rumors,” and this didn’t have the smell of one, but I could be wrong. Lord knows I’m wrong more often than I would like. So could Rep. Bachmann and others. So, I’ll keep my eyes open, and readers, please do so, too. Keep us abreast of this situation.
As far as the statement in your Schumer letter that reads, “You will be happy to know that the federal recovery bill did not give money to ACORN,” I do believe this statement to currently be true, since a hefty portion of the porkulus bill has yet to be distributed/allocated. However, ACORN, based on my understanding of the language in the bill, could receive between 5 and 8 billion dollars from the stimulus/porkulus bill. At present, it has not. It, and its “baby ACORN” offspring do receive federal funds from other federal pockets.
I really appreciate you giving this input, Stan. Would hate for my Halloween to be ruined with the sound of distant cackling of Bertha Lewis, roaring with glee that ACORN is back in the dough and at the taxpayers’ expense. We’ll just have to see what happens on October 31, 2009 at midnight.
I.m very skeptical on any attempts to defund acorn in any way shape or form.
With the 2010 elections coming up, do you think for a moment that acorn would be kneecapped by the lack of funding?
The investigations on acorn need to proceed to the level of absolutely shutting them down, however, with the shell game that goes on within these organizations, I won’t trust anything I hear.
I guarantee there will be attempted corruption in the election process in 2010.
The libs have too much to lose, and the conservatives have everything to gain.
