“Blaming Bush” Isn’t a Strategy on Afghanistan, Obama, and You’re Overdoing That “Mop” Thing

If I see another video of President Barack H. Obama at a fundraiser talking about that blasted mop to clean up “Bush’s mess,” I don’t know what I’ll do. But it won’t be pretty. Guaranteed.

Blaming “the mess” on George W. Bush got old and worn out, oh, about 200 days ago. It’s startling to realize next week is the first Obama-as-POTUS anniversary.

OK, to be fair, Obama didn’t take office until January 20, but immediately after the election, he made the covers of umpteen magazines, gave umpteen interviews, and started assembling his historic “dream team” so that “he could hit the ground running.” The “dream team” from hell…

I’m surprised he didn’t blame Bush on his team’s inability to pay their taxes. Or to “forget” that they under-reported thousands upon thousands of dollars. Or for them to not be Chicago thugs, radical “truther” Communists, or Mao groupies.

And now, he’s doing it again with Afghanistan. We need a strategy for this war, Mr. President. And blaming Bush ain’t it. Neither is golfing nor fundraising. You need to exit “campaign mode” and get down to business… that of being Commander in Chief, not “Duffer in Chief” or “Fundraiser in Chief.” You need to let go of your “blame-game, mop schtick” and focus on doing your job.

Excellent think piece here analyzing Obama’s blunders with Afghanistan, written by one of my “new heroes,” Charles Krauthammer. He opens with an excellent story about three letters, which I’ve not included here… you must read the article in its entirety. Well done, Charles, well done.

From Charles Krauthammer, National Review Online: Three Envelopes — Afghanistan is Obama’s problem:

…Is there anything he hasn’t blamed George W. Bush for? The economy, global warming, the credit crisis, Middle East stalemate, the deficit, anti-Americanism abroad — everything but swine flu.

It’s as if Obama’s presidency hasn’t really started. He’s still taking inventory of the Bush years. Just this Monday, he referred to “long years of drift” in Afghanistan in order to, I suppose, explain away his own, well, year-long drift on Afghanistan.

This compulsion to attack his predecessor is as stale as it is unseemly. Obama was elected a year ago. He became commander in chief two months later. He then solemnly announced his own “comprehensive new strategy” for Afghanistan seven months ago. And it was not an off-the-cuff decision. “My administration has heard from our military commanders, as well as our diplomats,” the president assured us. “We’ve consulted with the Afghan and Pakistani governments, with our partners and our NATO allies, and with other donors and international organizations” and “with members of Congress.”

Obama is obviously unhappy with the path he himself chose in March. Fine. He has every right — indeed, duty — to reconsider. But what Obama is reacting to is the failure of his own strategy.

If you didn’t understand the “mop” reference at the top of this post, here’s a video that will clear that up for you.
