The U.S. Army has closed its massive Army base at Fort Hood, Texas, amid reports that several people have been shot and killed at the post.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The U.S. Army has closed its massive Army base at Fort Hood, Texas, amid reports that several people have been shot and killed at the post.

The Web site of the base in central Texas has posted an alert that says, ”Effective immediately Fort Hood is closed.” The Web site said that units at the base have been ordered to account for all personnel.

The site says, ”This is not a Drill. It is an Emergency Situation.”

Several television stations in Texas say several people were both killed and wounded in the shooting. Officials at the base and in the nearby town of Killeen, Texas, have not confirmed those accounts.

Fort Hood is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

This is so horrible, I can barely believe it’s happened. My mind won’t accept it… this kind of attack on our military, while on the largest military base in the country. I simply can’t believe it. It defies logic.

FORT HOOD – Seven people have been killed and at least 20 injured after atleast 2 shooters opened fire on Fort Hood Thursday afternoon.

Fort Hood officials say one person is in custody and another is cornered; but are asking people to stay away from windows.

We’ve learned an incident has taken place at the sports dome, now known as the soldier readiness area.

The Nolanville Fire Department tells News Channel 25 that they’ve been asked to bring all available EMS and Rescue personnel.

Darnall Army Community Hospital reports they have received numerous victims. The spokeswoman could not confirm what types of injuries the victims were suffering.

Schools on Lock Down

* Temple ISD Schools Have Been locked down as part of this incident. The district’s spokeswoman tells News Channel 25 Temple Police are placing officers at each TISD campus. The schools will dismiss as usual.
* Belton ISD is on Lockdown
* Killeen ISD has nine schools on post on lockdown, KISD asks parents to stay away.

(AP) – The U.S. Army says 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting rampage on the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. The Army says one shooter has been killed and two others apprehended on Thursday in the shooting and all are U.S. soldiers.

WASHINGTON — A law enforcement official says a shooting suspect at Fort Hood has been identified as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan.

The official said Hasan, believed to be in his late 30s, was killed after opening fire at the base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

The official says investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name, or if he changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith at some point in his life.

…The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

Hasan allegedly opened fire and killed 11 people on the base before he was shot, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12. The general said there were “eyewitness accounts of more than one shooter,” and the others were tracked to an adjacent facility.

Cone called the attack “a terrible tragedy, stunning.” He said the community was “absolutely devastated.”

Update: Reports now are consistent that the shooter (or one of them) used two pistols to shoots his victims at close range, execution style, probably as many as 50 rounds. The name of the suspected shooter, killed by police, was Maj. Malik Nidal Nasan, reportedly an Army psychologist who recently arrived at the post. There are also reports that Ft Hood’s authorities are continuing to look for another shooter.
