Sexist or Not? Americans Discuss the Sarah Palin Photo on Newsweek’s Cover (video)
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on November 19, 2009

Hey, Newsweek, FIFY... fixed your Sarah Palin cover for you. You're welcome. The rip-off of the photo from Runner's World is your own headache and legal problem.
Sexist or not? That’s the question being posed all through the blogosphere and talk shows about the Newsweek cover of Sarah Palin. Overwhelmingly, those who think the photo of Sarah Palin is not sexist are almost all liberals. No surprise. Many liberals think pregnant teen girls shouldn’t have to talk to their parents about getting abortions, either.
The sexy-cheesecake-y photo on the cover of the left-wing Newsweek (let’s rename it “Ragweed”) is getting a lot of heat, including from some Democrats. The mag’s editor claims the photo was accidentally printed without securing permission or paying fitness magazine Runner’s World for using it.
Oh, brother.
Newsweek didn’t legally obtain the photo it used to slam former Gov. Palin, resulting in bad press and bad PR for the struggling magazine. Let’s remember, Palin is now a private citizen, not an elected politician. I’m thinking some kind of legal recourse would be prudent and justified, but that’s just IMHO.

Sarah Palin Newsweek Cover: Palin not Carrie Prejean
Comments here are pro, con, and indifferent… unique perspectives from all over the country, a cross section of America. Food for thought.
These were posted at several websites and the first ones here are from the Los Angeles Times … plenty of backlash out there, Newsweek. Don’t forget that conservatives buy magazines, too. I’ve a feeling quite a few may choose to not buy your magazine in the future:

When I lived in the middle east, I was in a taxi with several men and one older woman. everyone was having fun talking about daily stresses and the difficulty of getting through israeli checkpoints. the woman seemed to really be enjoying the banter as all seemed to. but then one of the men said with typical middle-eastern male authority, “Really all the problems come back to women. They started this and we’re stuck with it.” The banter stopped with a powerful thud. No one in the taxi said anything but all knew that the woman was just escorted out of the jovial banter. It became a boy’s club now. The men continued talking about other things with a little less joviality (if there’s such a word). The woman didn’t say one more word the whole trip home. I, being a foreigner, didn’t feel I had the authority to speak up. But it seems like Meacham and a lot of the boys in the msm (david letterman?) are doing the same thing to Sarah Pailin. It’s just as uncomfortable to me now as it was when I was in that car. Even some women are getting in on the act (dowd) I guess sexism is alright if it comes from the ones who coined the term in the first place. I felt bad about not speaking up in that car. I’d feel worst for not speaking up now.

This Newsweek Cover is despicable. I always preferred Time Magazine and now I feel justified. The intent was obvious and now what had been indifference to the career and voice of Sarah Palin – Newsweek has made me feel empathy for this woman who is being hounded and analyzed to the point of ridiculous.
Aren’t there other issues that deserve this attention?

I have subscribed to NewsWeek since the 1970′s. Earlier this year they over hauled their magazine and they converted the format from covering the news to a commentary filled magazine. The “news” is no longer in the mag, this cover picture so cleverly photo shopped from another source proves it. It is now fully a liberal commentary publication. I have found many of the articles to be offensive. So I have canceled my subscription.

To make it fair, Newsweek next cover should have our Idiot in Chief in a G string.

Having read the Runner’s World profile, there’s no way that the photos Palin took for that issue should have been run in a news magazine. They were clearly staged and designed to highlight her running stretches and outfits. I thought Newsweek changed the context of that feature by appropriating one of the photos.
If someone had done this to Hillary Clinton, then Jon Meacham would have been fired by sundown. (and, yes, I DID call my blog “An American Lion” long before Meacham wrote his book by the same name and yes, I did steal the title from the book about Teddy Roosevelt so I am biased).
No one should be depicted this way.

I wonder if all of you people who are trashing Palin would feel the same way if Michelle Obama had posed for a running magazine with bare legs only to find that a conservative magazine had taken it and put it on their cover with a tag line trashing her.
There are two points to an argument against Newsweek. 1. As a news magazine why are they making any sort of judgment against a political figure? Their objectivity goes out the window right there. And 2. Why is it that it is a completely unrelated photo in a health magazine with her showing how fit she is illustrates that point? How does a picture of her showing her legs demonstrate that she is “bad” for everyone? I guess what Newsweek is saying is female politicians are bad for the country when they are beautiful and healthy.
A few comments gleaned from Politico, Palin calls Newsweek cover ‘sexist’ and ‘degrading’; Meacham responds:

The Newsweek cover is a charming photo of a lovely woman with pretty legs. Not sexist at all.

I have seen pictures of President Obama topless in swin trunks. For comparison, Newsweek should take one of those photos and plaster it on their cover with the headline “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Barack?-He’s the whole country’s problem now….”

It is good to know that history has proven over and over that when the misdirected and inappropriate words liberals spew come to shoving, liberals always crawl back under their rocks and cower.

I used to respect Newsweek, not anymore. It’s a rag.

I’m no fan of Palin, but she has a point. She posed for this photo with the understanding it would be used for a running magzine. Newsweek wanted to use it to denigrate her, using the subhead how do you “solve a problem” like Palin. Liberals would have a point about Palin “whining” if Newsweek regularly ran photos of the Obamas on their cover in skimpy outfits and talked of them in negative terms.

I wonder if Newsweek circulation is now going to drop in real steep decline. But they honestly proved how sexiest they are in MSM
Posted by: mojoe
You have to be kidding. Have you seen any guys on the cover of Newsweek lately wearing speedos? Newsweek is simply trying to sell more copies of its rag and they believe that Sarah Palin in shorts is going to help. This magazine is on the skids just like its editor. Truth be known though the media is just helping keep Palin the press. With regards to 2012 pick anyone you know, anyone, and they would beat Obama. 2012 is going to be a turkey shoot and the dems are the turkeys. Should be great fun to watch!

Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham told Yahoo! News that the photo choice was simply the “most interesting image available”: BULL____. I dont give a crap about Palin but Meachams response is PURE CRAP.

Say, didn’t one of your editors of that pub, Evan Thomas compare Barrack to a deity….”he’s god-like”? I guess that means we will never see His Holiness in any light that would make him appear foolish, or, well, less than holy. Newsweek is hellbent on destroying Sarah Palin. My question is why? Is she that big a threat? I see her as an individual putting forth her political views and opinions, and nothing more. You don’t have to listen – or report – what she says if you don’t like it. Then, why, oh why, do we keep reading about her? Today the WaPo had two columns on the editorial page and the Style section front page was devoted to Palin. Again – why?

Come on Obamabots. This is the same Newsweek that had the Cover of Joe Biden with the line “Why Joe is no joke”. Palin may be a media craving ditz, but Joe Biden is not much better, and in some ways even has less mental facilities since his aneurysms. Newsweek made a desperate move becoming the MSNBC of journalism, and I suspect will be out of business in 2 years or less. See ya Jon Meacham!!!!
A handful more comments from Today on Newsvine:

If you read the article closely you will see that the photo was taken for another magazine, Runners World, where the photo would have been fine, putting it on the political magazine Newsweek puts it out of place. It would be the same as taking a picture of Obama on vacation in swim trunks on a beach and putting it on Newsweek with a headline line “Is this the man leading our troops?” Too bad that a top line magazine like Newsweek is stooping so low to get publiciity. (I did find it to be a nice picture of Palin though, too bad all our politicians don’t look that nice.)
From fireyone
It doesn’t matter…she posed for the picture. If she didn’t want it used for anything other than Runners world she should have negotiated better. Doesn’t speak well of her ability to manage her own image. I certainly wouldn’t want her managing the image of the US around the world.
From Peed-off Peon
Dems should be so lucky to have someone so photogenic as Palin. Imagine Hillary in shorts and it makes you want to become non-political. Nuff Said.
You guys are funny: “she should have negotiated better” How do you manage your own image when there are others like most of the people here who use whatever they can to make others look bad or misconstrue the facts to suit their purpose. Thats why America appears to be hated so: people who stretch the truth or pervert for their own benifit. If you think for a minute that this make Palin or the republicans LOOK bad – think again. My comment about Hillary in shorts stands: Even Bill would agree with me on that.

When a bully in the school yard is too scared of someone, they call them names.
She needs the body of Madilene Albright, the mug of Janet Reno and a husband who cheats on her for the liberals to get off her back. What’s worse, after Sarah Palin all children of canidates are on the table. Underaged or not.

It is wrong because the picture was for a jogging magazine not for a political one. Would you have a problem if Obama was photographed on his way to go play basketball and the picture was used for the cover of the Wall Street Journal for an article on his fumbling of the economy?

Gotta agree with John Doe “Who cares she’s an air head.” Get a grip folks. 1st off Sarah got where she is 1st by her looks then by luck & now by operating on sound bites.
I’m sure there are leftists in the media just like there are radicals of all kinds (Limbaugh & mid-east government controlled media just to offer a few of the other radical a-heads) so there’s no point in bellowing the “poor little conservative right winger” crap.

Palin is a class act. Newsweek is pathetic and predictable… Democrat=good and Republican=bad- no exceptions!
Posted by: LYNN98108
Bobby J and all the rest, if Sarah got to where she is based on looks it is befitting of Omama to continue to split his pants when visiting foreign dignitaries. Clearly he was never qualified to run anything let alone the US government. What he is good at is to fill the heads of all the Omamanites with empty promises and broken dreams. Oops. Forgot. “He is the only one who can heal the holes in your soles”. Apparently that hasn’t happened, you all are still bitter, name blaming and drunk on your own rhetoric.

No, she posed for it for a running magazine. Newsweek lifted it to portray her as THEY saw fit. That you agree with them, lets people know where you stand too.
Part of me thinks that there is a whole section of the population that is angry with Sarah Palin for being outspoken and to the point, while unfortunately being more beautiful than they.
Just by the responses you can ascertain that. Like everyone here knows her personally. It’s weakness of mind in it’s finest form.

Ya know, I have a blog (several, actually), and I write for an online magazine. There are very strict rules about using photos that you don’t have the rights to, and I could get in a lot of trouble for stealing a photo, if I was that stupid. How is Newsweek getting away with this? Hope Sarah and RW sue their pants off.
On another note, I quit reading Newsweek probably 30 years ago. It’s been a liberal rag for years. I wouldn’t use it to put under my cat’s litter box to catch it when she misses.
This is just amazing read so I just had to say thankyou.
