For our readers in Philadelphia… info on the Philadelphia Marathon. Great weather!

Action News, Philadelphia Marathon kicks off:

Thousands of runners are participating in this morning’s Philadelphia Marathon

The event is relatively new – this is only the 16th running of the Philadelphia Marathon. But it just keeps getting bigger… and better.

Organizers expect to set another record this year. As runners from across our area, and around the world, are in town for the marathon and the half marathon.

By the way, the Rothman 8K and “Kids Run/Walk” begins right after the marathon and half marathon begin.

The marathon course is 26.2 miles long. It begins at 21st Street and the Ben Franklin Parkway, then makes its way down to Old City. The runners will go by Philadelphia’s historical landmarks, before heading down into South Philadelphia, along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers into Manayunk and back to the finish line at the Art Museum.

Meantime, the marathon may turn a simple drive in the city into an athletic event of its own. There are a lot of road closures to report.

Police say they Martin Luther King Drive, Kelly Drive, and parts of the Ben Franklin Parkway are already shutdown. They’re expected to reopen sometime early this afternoon.

Arch Street from 16th Street to 4th Street will be blocked from 7 to 8 this morning. Expect intermittent closures around there as well.

Southbound I-95 at Washington Avenue is off limits from 7:15 to 8:15.

South Street from Front to 6th is closed from 7:15 to 9:00.

Citybuzz: 15th Annual Philadelphia Marathon:

The 15th Annual Philadelphia Marathon is one of the most historic marathon routes available. Runners and spectators alike can experience revolutionary history and the Greek-inspired architecture of Philadelphia while cheering on the marathon runners.

From Tabernacle United Church, Philadelphia Marathon this Sunday:

Getting to church this Sunday, November 22 may be a little more difficult because the Philadelphia Marathon is taking place. Please make alternate parking, driving or transportation plans. (The course does NOT affect the subway/surface trolleys and the Market/Frankford El.)

* There will be absolutely NO PARKING along the Marathon Course beginning at 5 am on November 22.

* Street closures are on a rolling basis and will happen as runners pass by.
On Saturday, November 21, 12th Street from Arch to Race Sts will be closed from 8:30 am-12:30 pm.

* On Sunday, November 22, Kelly Drive to Ridge Ave. will be closed from 6 am to 4 pm and the inner lanes of Ben Franklin Parkway, including cross streets, will be closed from 6 am-3 pm.

US Post Today: Big Turnout, Great Weather for the Philadelphia Marathon:

Some Philadelphia High School students are participating in the Philadelphia Marathon, after training for it since February.

After 9 months of training, kids involved with Students Run Philly Style are finally participating in the run they’ve worked all year for. Running leader Cedric Edwards:

“We get students from around the city to train for the marathon. It’s the only program in the country that does this. So it’s a great thing for students to get out of their normal sedentary lives and run a full or a half marathon.”

(Kuznits:) “What’s the incentive for a kid to run 26.2 miles?”

“To cross the finish line.”
