Watch any cop show. When the bad guys are being pursued by law enforcement in a high-speed chase or an extensive investigation, the first thing those ne’er-do-wells do is dump the damning evidence. A gun used in a killing, a stash of drugs, a kidnap victim, a stolen car, embezzlement evidence… you name it, the bad guys will discard or destroy anything that will incriminate them in wrongdoing.

So, as in this case with ClimateGate, if you were a global-warming charlatan of an evil-scientist-mathematician-criminal-type at the CRU, you’d likely delete all your original data before anyone of authority could review it for manipulation, errors, or plain old crappy-junk science. And then innocently say it was done to “save space.” Because that’s what all scientists do, right?

They all worry needlessly about computer and hardcopy archived-document space they’re hogging up, and so, decide, “Heck, these raw data files will never again be needed, and we simply don’t have the time to pop on over to Walmart to buy a 3 gig flash thumb drive for 10 bucks to transfer and preserve the magnetic-tape data with our revolutionary basic calculations. So, let’s just be cavalier here and DELETE EVERYTHING. Oh, and all those space-hogging paper copies of the raw data, too… toss those out to free up storage in the basement.”

Never.

Real and honest scientists are never cavalier. I’ve worked with them for years. They bend over backwards carefully saving any tiny shred of anything that they may need to support their hypothesis, their theory, their calculations, their pre-tests, their post-tests, their conclusions. Backups of everything, sometimes backups of backups. Electronic drafts and notes and scribbled-upon napkins… they save all corroborating data, and ALWAYS save their raw data, forever if they can. Because real and honest scientists (and engineers and investigative reporters who aren’t in the Obama Tank) are fastidiously anal-retentive about their research being flawless and holding up to intense peer scrutiny. Deleting the data AFTER a Freedom of Information request was filed is not just stupid, but criminal.

Unless the heat is on, about to reveal your colossal fraud upon the world… then, quick, DUMP THE DATA. Just wondering… with data retrieval systems being as advanced as they are, couldn’t the dumped data somehow be retrieved? Or have I been watching too many episodes of CSI and Criminal Minds? Also wondering… when will the fringe media jump in on this? Only FOX News (again) is reporting on this global warming fraud.

Legitimate scientific discoveries and their calculations and processes are a source of pride, to be shared with colleagues and the world; fraudulent science and calculations are to be suppressed and destroyed, like a mobster’s damning bloody lethal weapon.

Scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

The UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation.

The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building.

The admission follows the leaking of a thousand private emails sent and received by Professor Phil Jones, the CRU’s director. In them he discusses thwarting climate sceptics seeking access to such data.

In a statement on its website, the CRU said: “We do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (quality controlled and homogenised) data.”

The CRU is the world’s leading centre for reconstructing past climate and temperatures. Climate change sceptics have long been keen to examine exactly how its data were compiled. That is now impossible.

Homogenised (British spelling) data… translation: bogus, manipulated data.

The most obvious thing that strikes anyone wading through the CRU documents is how easy it was for a small number of “experts” to propel their data-raped conclusions first into a “peer-reviewed” “consensus” and then up through western governments into the international fait accomplis of Kyoto, the IPCC and now Copenhagen. I initially assumed stuff like this was just a bit of naked obstructionism toward a few troublemakers:

I find it hard to believe that the British Antarctic Survey would permit the deletion of relevant files for two recent publications or that there aren’t any backups for the deleted data on institutional servers.

But no, it was systemic. Hysterical queens like Gordon Brown are demanding we introduce global taxation, micro-regulation of every aspect of your life, massive multi-trillion dollar transfers from the productive sector to eco-rackets and transnational bureaucracies, bovine flatulence levies and extraterrestrial surveillance of once sovereign states on the basis of fevered speculations for which there is no raw data…

Show of hands how many doubt that the data dumping was only “in order to save space”?

I didn’t think so.

In no other line of work would data dumping and suppression be tolerated (that is, unless you work for the Obama administration); in fact, in most places where this sort of data manipulation is discovered, your a** is grass – meaning that not only are you out of a job, but that you’ve been thoroughly discredited.

Given star billing by the IPCC, not least for the way it appeared to eliminate the long-accepted Mediaeval Warm Period when temperatures were higher they are today, the graph became the central icon of the entire man-made global warming movement.

Since 2003, however, when the statistical methods used to create the “hockey stick” were first exposed as fundamentally flawed by an expert Canadian statistician Steve McIntyre, an increasingly heated battle has been raging between Mann’s supporters, calling themselves “the Hockey Team”, and McIntyre and his own allies, as they have ever more devastatingly called into question the entire statistical basis on which the IPCC and CRU construct their case.

The senders and recipients of the leaked CRU emails constitute a cast list of the IPCC’s scientific elite, including not just the “Hockey Team”, such as Dr Mann himself, Dr Jones and his CRU colleague Keith Briffa, but Ben Santer, responsible for a highly controversial rewriting of key passages in the IPCC’s 1995 report; Kevin Trenberth, who similarly controversially pushed the IPCC into scaremongering over hurricane activity; and Gavin Schmidt, right-hand man to Al Gore’s ally Dr James Hansen, whose own GISS record of surface temperature data is second in importance only to that of the CRU itself.

There are three threads in particular in the leaked documents which have sent a shock wave through informed observers across the world. Perhaps the most obvious, as lucidly put together by Willis Eschenbach (see McIntyre’s blog Climate Audit and Anthony Watt’s blog Watts Up With That ), is the highly disturbing series of emails which show how Dr Jones and his colleagues have for years been discussing the devious tactics whereby they could avoid releasing their data to outsiders under freedom of information laws.

They have come up with every possible excuse for concealing the background data on which their findings and temperature records were based.

This in itself has become a major scandal, not least Dr Jones’s refusal to release the basic data from which the CRU derives its hugely influential temperature record, which culminated last summer in his startling claim that much of the data from all over the world had simply got “lost”. Most incriminating of all are the emails in which scientists are advised to delete large chunks of data, which, when this is done after receipt of a freedom of information request, is a criminal offence.

So they managed to destroy the paper and tape data as well as delete all the electronic files, including back-ups, of the raw data. Impressive.

When would scientists expecting the world to take them seriously throw out the raw data on which their conclusions are based? Probably at the same time that they e-mail each other to launch professional vendettas against skeptics and conspire to hide contradictory data. The University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit — already in a deep scandal over the e-mails released by either a hacker or a whistleblower that shows highly unscientific behavior behind the scenes — now admits they threw out the raw data on which much of their theories on anthropogenic global warming are based.
