Dem Harry Reid’s Latest Lunacy: Opposing ObamaCare the Same As Supporting Slavery… Get That Race Card Out of My Face, Dirty Harry (video)
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on December 8, 2009
I’m tired of being called a racist by Nevada’s Democrat Sen. Harry Reid simply because I don’t want socialized health care. You probably are, too. A majority of Nevadans are, too. If you oppose government-run ObamaCare / ReidCare / PelosiCare, according to Reid, you’re not only a racist, but you’re no better than a pre-Civil War slave owner.
Harry, you’re dissolving into a blithering, unhinged moron. Congress is starting to notice. And many are becoming angry, plus a bit concerned, about your over-the-top racist accusations.
Get your vile race card out of my face, Harry…
From Michelle Malkin, Shhh! Don’t confuse Reid with history while he’s playing the race card!:
The Left has been playing the race card on Demcare from the start. Jesse Jackson. Jimmy Carter. Harry Reid.
Conservative producer/director Ray Griggs takes the smear meme head on…
Is Harry cracking up? Some in Congress think so… he is also stupidly trying to re-write history, since it was Republicans who fought to end racism in America, not Democrats. And his approval numbers in Nevada have taken another drastic drop: his approval with voters is at a pitiable 38%.
From FOX News: Reid Compares Opponents of Health Care Reform to Supporters of Slavery:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his GOP-blasting rhetoric to a new level Monday, comparing Republicans who oppose health care reform to lawmakers who clung to the institution of slavery more than a century ago.
The Nevada Democrat, in a sweeping set of accusations on the Senate floor, also compared health care foes to those who opposed women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement — even though it was Sen. Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat, who unsuccessfully tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and it was Republicans who led the charge against slavery.
Senate Republicans on Monday called Reid’s comments “offensive” and “unbelievable.”
But Reid argued that Republicans are using the same stalling tactics employed in the pre-Civil War era.
“Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, ’slow down, stop everything, let’s start over.’ If you think you’ve heard these same excuses before, you’re right,” Reid said Monday. “When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said ’slow down, it’s too early, things aren’t bad enough.’”
He continued: “When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn’t quite right.
“When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today.”
That seemed to be a reference to Thurmond’s famous 1957 filibuster — the late senator switched parties several years later.
Reid’s office stood by the remarks, with spokesman Jim Manley saying Republicans have “done nothing but obstruct health care” in the Senate.
“Today’s feigned outrage is nothing but a ploy to distract from the fact they have no plan to lower the cost of health care, stop insurance company abuses or protect Medicare,” Manley said.
But Republicans said they were genuinely appalled. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Reid’s remarks were over the top.
“That is extremely offensive,” he told Fox News. “It’s language that should never be used, never be used. … Those days are not here now.”
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who on the Senate floor read from this FoxNews.com article and asked that it be placed in the record, called on Reid to return to the floor and, if not apologize, at least explain what he meant.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., suggested Reid was starting to “crack” under the pressure of the health care reform debate.
From The Clampdown: Harry Reid Gets It Backwards (As Usual):
So Harry Reid has come out of the lunatic closet and compared the opponents of health care reform to those advocating for the continuation of slavery, the opposition to women’s suffrage and civil rights.
Congratulations, Harry! You have won the award for the single stupidest statement made by a politician in 2009.
From USA Today, Reid fires back at critics over ’slavery’ remark:
USA TODAY’s John Fritze reports from the Hill that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid isn’t about to back down from his comments yesterday comparing health care critics to slavery apologists.
The Nevada Democrat came out of caucus luncheon this afternoon without saying anything about health care. But he did defend himself from critics, including RNC chairman Michael Steele, who urged Reid to apologize for his comments.
“Anyone who willingly distorts my comments is proving my point,” Reid said.
Distort your comments? No need to distort anything you’ve said, Harry… your race-baiting lunacy and lack of knowledge about American history are coming through loud and clear.
UPDATE, December 10, 2009… public option, per “Dingy” Reid is now out (yeah, right… the Democrats will merely bide their time and re-insert it in small increments over time). Notable quote from Rush Limbaugh from his December 9, 2009 EIB radio broadcast: “If there’s not going to be a public option, like Harry Reid’s saying today, then what the hell do we need a trillion dollars for? What are we spending it on?”
