Give Water: This Is Christmas… This Is Advent Conspiracy (video)

Bringing Christ back to Christmas… more worship, less spending. More giving to those truly in need.

Christmas can still change the world.

From a page on Advent Conspiracy’s website:

Love well. Give wells.

People are dying from the lack of clean water. In fact, it’s the leading cause of death in under resourced countries. 1.8 million people die every year from water born illnesses. That includes 3,900 children a day. The solution to this problem is directly beneath our feet. Drilling a fresh water well is a relatively inexpensive, yet permanent solution to this epidemic. $10 will give a child clean water for life. That’s not an estimate. It’s a fact. And here’s another fact: Solving this water problem once and for all will cost about $10 billion. Not bad considering Americans spent $450 billion on Christmas last year. Our hope is that, by celebrating Christ in a new way at Christmas, the church can serve as the leading movement behind ending the water crisis once and for all.

Advent Conspiracy asks that every church and organization who participates in this program give at least 25% of their offering to the water/redistribution project of their choice. For three years, Advent Conspiracy has partnered with Living Water International to help solve this problem. Oh, and no money comes through Advent Conspiracy.

This movement is growing and many more people, including the left-wing media, are taking notice.

The message of cutting back on the crass commercialism of Christmas and helping those truly in need is hardly new. However, it is now being presented in a fresh way that makes it either seem new and revolutionary, or the message is suddenly resonating with our nation’s unemployed and underemployed for the first time.

This year, Barack Obama’s craptastic economy may be bringing more people back to the true meaning of Christmas… celebrating the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ. And with the escalating vicious attacks being made by atheists and non-Christians against Christmas and religious displays, this is uplifting news.

From BeliefNet.com, ‘The Advent Conspiracy’ Movement Grows and the Media Takes Notice:

The promotional video for “The Advent Conspiracy” has had over a million hits on Youtube and Rick McKinley, pastor of Don Mller’s home church Imago Dei, has been giviing interviews speaking out on the four simple tenets of “Conspiracy”: Worship fully, spend less, give more, love all. Still, this doesn’t seem quite enough to me to cause such an internet buzz.

So I wonder if the media is thinking they are getting in on the front end of the hype of the next “Purpose Driven Life” and is expectng “Advent Conspiracy” mugs, t-shirts, bumper stickers and other merchandise to soon appear?

From Time, Church Group Attacks Christmas Commercialism:

…To a growing group of Christians, the focus on the commercial aspect of Christmas is the greatest threat to one of Christianity’s holiest days. “It’s the shopping, the going into debt, the worrying that ‘If I don’t spend enough money, someone will think I don’t love them,’ ” says Portland, Ore., pastor Rick McKinley. “Christians get all bent out of shape over the fact that someone didn’t say ‘Merry Christmas’ when I walked into the store. But why are we expecting the store to tell our story? That’s just ridiculous.”

McKinley is one of the leaders of an effort to do away with the frenzied activity and extravagant gift-giving of a commercial Christmas. Through a savvy viral video and marketing effort, the so-called Advent Conspiracy movement has exploded. Hundreds of churches on four continents and in at least 17 countries have signed up to participate. The Advent Conspiracy video has been viewed more than a million times on YouTube, and the movement boasts nearly 45,000 fans on Facebook. Baseball superstar Albert Pujols is a supporter — he spoke at a church event in St. Louis, Mo., to endorse the effort.

From Sequim Gazette [WA], Students conspire:

High school youths at Dungeness Community Church believe that Christmas still can change the world, and they have partnered with the Advent Conspiracy (www.AdventConspiracy.org) to celebrate Christmas by raising money to build wells in countries where clean water is unavailable.

“More people die from lack of clean water than all the natural disasters,” said David Lopes, a senior at Sequim High and leader in the church’s youth group.

“Ten dollars gives a child a lifetime supply of water.”

According to the Advent Conspiracy Web site, more than 3,900 children die each day from water-borne illnesses that are preventable when a clean water source is available.

The Advent Conspiracy is a grass-roots movement with more than 1,000 churches in 17 countries participating as co-conspirators. In addition to supporting the drilling of wells, they encourage congregations to think of meaningful acts of kindness as an option to replace traditional gifts.

“This is a different way to celebrate,” said Hannah Apelt, a sophomore at Sequim High.
