New December Google Logo Launched Today… Happy Holidays Series 2009 Begins; UPDATED: Lame & Disappointing Google Christmas Logo
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on December 21, 2009
December 21, 2009:
A new Google doodle logo is showcased today on the homepage of the Google website… that of a Christmas-lit palm tree on what appears to be an island on a picture postcard. Multi-colored triangular shapes line the horizon. The title of the Google title graphic is “Happy Holidays.” It appears that this logo modification may be the first of a series of new Google logos to be launched over the next few days until Christmas, as has been done with previous December holiday Google logos from years past.
Today’s logo uses the sun, at either the sunrise or sunset mark at the horizon, as the letter “O” and the palm tree forms the letter “L.”
Today’s holiday-inspired logo is a bit cryptic, so we’ll see what tomorrow’s Google logo will be to be more certain about the specific holiday theme… what in the heck were they thinking at Google HQ? Travel? International celebration? Pres. Obama’s Christmas taxpayer-funded vacation in Hawaii? Tribute to the winter solstice? An anniversary of some kind? No way does this obscure logo doodle honor Christmas.
Too early to tell, and a Google search I conducted just now came up empty with any kind of explanation. Tomorrow may shed more light on the Google curiosity. Maybe tomorrow’s will be more Christmas-y.
UPDATE, December 22, 2009:
This is today’s Google holiday logo… a postcard of snowmen has been added to yesterday’s logo… snowmen CAN signify the Christmas season, but again, this logo doodle is just not capturing any kind of Christmas spirit:
UPDATE, December 23, 2009:
Third day of the Google holiday series… today, another postcard has been added to the first two. This one is of a lit log cabin near the edge of a body of water. A small boat is in the water. There are snow-tipped mountains in the background. Do the Google logo artist(s) have a clue about Christmas? The postcard idea may have sounded good on paper, but visually, it’s becoming a mess.
UPDATE, December 24, 2009:
This is today’s Google holiday logo, the fourth in the series… perhaps a postcard of a desert? I really can’t make it out, but those tall green structures appear to be cactus with fireworks (maybe) going off in the sky. Or maybe they’re rock formations. Most of the word “Google” is obscured by the layered postcards. Just a portion of the letter “G” can be seen… you can’t even tell that it’s the Google logo anymore. Odd and jumbled-looking… I’m not impressed with how this is turning out. It’s becoming an untidy, ridiculous mess.
UPDATE, December 25, 2009, Christmas Day:
Day 5 in the series, Christmas Day… the newest postcard added to the Google homepage logo is, well, likely meant to be metaphorical, but it’s strange for Christmas Day. A space shuttle out in space passing a yellow, glowing orb (a moon or sun?), plus a retro, glittery peace sign floating in space. “Cryptic” is an understatement, although “peace on Earth, good will to men” comes to mind. The peace sign could symbolize the birth of Christ, as he was the Son of God who was instrumental in providing guidance for mankind to follow God and be a people of peace.
I’m trying to be fair, but how hard was it to make this logo a little less secular and esoteric and a bit more comprehensible? Google makes tons of money from advertising from its millions of daily hits… maybe they should ditch their art director and offer a prize to its users to design a better logo for Christmas next year. They could save big money on whatever they’re currently paying. And I’ll bet it would be a much better visual.
Quizzical. Lame. Disappointing.
Since Google felt compelled to NOT mention Christmas, even once during the five-day series (not even on Christmas Day), in its weird series, I’ll do it for them: Merry Christmas!
