Comedienne Joan Rivers... treated as a terrorist threat at airport by security

Who knew that comedy veteran Joan Rivers was a terrorist risk? Yes, some of her jokes have bombed over the years, but this latest “War on Terror” action is ridiculous. It’s the cartoony, proverbial “Wile E. Coyote dropping gigantic ACME anvil on the Roadrunner” approach to CYA… which never fares well. Just ask the Coyote.

This is but a glimmer of the idiocy we can expect in 2010. More airport horror stories are sure to come. It’s the Age of Obama’s newest bumbling security efforts… first, the administration members are lazy, complacent, and under-react, then counter that with hyper-knee-jerk over-reaction.

DHS Janet “The System Worked!” Napolitano and her Homeland Security team must be running scared for their horrific Abdulmutallab “Underwear Bomber” blunder on Flight 253 on Christmas Day. Increasing and improving airport security is a GOOD thing, something JaNo should have been on top of all along. It’s a good thing, but only if that increased security makes sense and focuses heavily on the profiles of known terrorists, which up until now have all been male Islamic radicals with shady or criminal pasts. Sounds straight-forward, doesn’t it?

Alas, more incredible screw-ups at the airport… Rather than profiling 20-something Muslim men with connections to Yemen terrorist training camps, traveling alone and boarding planes without luggage or valid passports, new airport security measures appear to instead be targeting aging Jewish comediennes.

Famous ones at that, for crying out loud.

I’m thinking that once they see the passport of hip hop artist Sean Combs, aka Sean “Puffy” Combs, aka Puff Daddy, aka P. Diddy, aka Puffy, aka Sean John, aka Sean “Diddy” Combs, aka Diddy, aka Puffy Combs, aka who the heck even cares?, the TSA passport police will go into a freak-out meltdown on Mr. Combs with their terrorist suspicions based on his self-absorbed, unhinged obsession with aliases.

Poor old Joan only had one alias.

LOS ANGELES – Joan Rivers is many things: Funny lady. Jewelry mogul. Red carpet mercenary. But a terrorist?

Can we talk?

Rivers, 76, was deemed a danger to national security and booted from a Newark-bound flight in Costa Rica on Sunday by a jittery Continental Airlines gate agent who found the two names on her passport fishy.

Her passport reads: Joan Rosenberg AKA Joan Rivers. Rosenberg was her late husband’s last name.

The “nasty and cruel” Continental gate agent bumped Rivers from the last flight out Sunday and the comedian found herself alone (her daughter, Melissa, flew out to Los Angeles earlier in the day) and with no ATM card and just $100 cash, she said.

Rivers’ tale of woe put a famous face on travel’s new reality – one that leaves many feeling like common criminals.

“If I were going to make up an alias, I wouldn’t pick Rosenberg. I’d pick Jolie or Pitt,” said Rivers, back home Monday in New York with her sense of humor intact. “Do terrorists wear Manolo Blahniks? I can tell you Donna Karan does not make anything that hides a bomb,” she said.

“I tried the tears; they didn’t work. I tried reasoning. I couldn’t bribe because I didn’t have any money,” she said. “I said ‘I’m going to have a heart attack over this,’ so the woman called the paramedics.”

She said a porter, Eldon Ramos, took pity and found a friend to drive her 6-1/2 hours to the main airport in Costa Rica’s capital of San Jose for a flight leaving Monday morning.

New York-area travelers were also reporting their own horror stories. “It was just one security checkpoint after the other,” said Carmella Rodriguez, 65, of Brooklyn, after barely making it through customs at Newark with her nephew after arriving from Panama. “I told my nephew I felt like I was a delinquent person.”

Word to the wise: Sean Combs/P. Diddy, maybe you’d better take the bus for a while, dude…
