USS Starship Coakley may be about to go down in flames

“Help me, Obi Won Obama… you’re my only hope.”

It doesn’t look like Starship Commander Barack Obama can work it into his demanding schedule to help the distressed starship USS Coakley… it’s about to go down in flames as the polls show growing approval for candidate Scott Brown.

From Boston Globe: Obama has no plans to campaign for Coakley:

President Obama has no plans to travel to Massachusetts to campaign for Democrat Martha Coakley in the home stretch in the special election to fill the US Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy.

Presidential press secretary Robert Gibbs said today in response to a question at a briefing in the White House that the “president doesn’t have any travel plans to campaign in Massachusetts,” because “it’s not on our schedule to go to next week.”

Coakley represents the critical 60th vote that Democrats need to pass the president’s health care overhaul. Coakley’s opponents — Republican Scott Brown and independent Joseph L. Kennedy — have both said they would vote to block the health care bill.

The president did, however, send an email to supporters today imploring them to help push Coakley over the top.

“We all need Ted Kennedy’s seat to be filled by a champion for change — and Martha Coakley is that champion,” Obama wrote in the message.

“The stakes are high. Time is short,” he added. “And your role is essential.”

Translation of MIA Starship Commander Obama’s message: “Blah, blah, blah, hopenchange, blah, blah, blah…”

UPDATE, January 15, 2009: So much can change in 24 hours. POTUS either suddenly realized Coakley’s popularity is dropping like a hip hop artist’s pants and does need his help, or he has fun family plans in mind for a mini-vacation in Massachusetts and will sandwich Coakley in. Either way, Obi Won Obama has had a change of heart. It was announced that he will fly in and give Coakley his own special “insert template Hallmark/Ronald Reagan with a touch of Winston Churchill speech here” endorsement of her. From Telegram.com, Worcester, MA: Republican U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown yesterday accepted the endorsement of the Police Department’s two major unions:

Local 911, New England Police Benevolent Association, and Local 504, International Brotherhood of Police Officers, handed their endorsement to the state senator. The endorsement comes one day after a debate in which Mr. Brown and his main opponent, Democrat Attorney General Martha Coakley, squared off. The special election to fill the seat formerly held by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy will be held Tuesday.

Sgt. Donald E. Cummings, president of Local 504, said Mr. Brown’s service in the National Guard shows that he knows the threat of terrorism is real, and understands the role public safety personnel play in protecting residents.

Stephen Gunnerson, president of Local 911 patrolmen’s union, called Mr. Brown a “tireless advocate for public safety.” He cited Mr. Brown’s support for Jessica’s Law and Haley’s Bill and his support for sex offender and CORI reform.

I printed an e-mail from a reader I received yesterday about union workers with Coakley signs standing outside the UMass debate venue. The e-mail reported: ” While speaking with one of the union guys holding the Coakley sign, he admitted that his union was paying him $50 to stand and hold the sign. I was blown away, I always thought that these guys were out in the cold like us, doing what we thought was the right thing to do, not that they were actually being paid a fee to do it. The best part was when he admitted that although he was there because he needed the money, he was voting for Scott!!”

Not realizing he was being video taped, a member of the “Sheet Metal Workers” union, Local 17, admits that he was being forced to come down to hold a sign, but he’s at least being paid $50. He also openly admits that he’s voting for Brown…

And despite her “law and order” platform, she can’t keep the votes of police unions, either. Not even one affiliated with her Purple Shirt patrons at the SEIU…

How is it possible that a Republican just might have a chance at a Senate seat in one of the bluest states in the US?

The Massachusetts special election on Jan. 19 to replace Sen. Edward Kennedy was supposed to be an easy win for Martha Coakley (D), Massachusetts’ attorney general. She’s run statewide campaigns before, has good name recognition with voters, and received the backing of Senator Kennedy’s wife and family.

In contrast, her challenger, state Sen. Scott Brown (R), is a previously little-known local politician in a state that has three Democrats for every Republican.

But Senator Brown has benefited from several factors – both inside the state and nationally. Among them: the healthcare-reform debate, the Christmas Day attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner, and a lackluster campaign by Brown’s opponent. Add to that Democrats’ flagging support across the United States, and suddenly, Brown is the underdog candidate with a shot at the race.

Brown announced Tuesday that he was able to raise $1.3 million for his campaign in a single 24-hour period with an online push. Accompanying the announcement was the slogan, “red invades blue.”

Coakley has also been courting out-of-state donors, and she attended a fundraising event in Washington Tuesday night.
