Sarah Palin Radio Interview, Plus Palin’s Controversial Speaking at Upcoming Tea Party Convention in Nashville (audio/video)

Excellent interview from last week with Alaska’s former governor Sarah Palin. Well worth the time to listen to it.

Would love to know who Sarah pictures in her mind’s eye when she’s kickboxing… the possibilities are delicious.

H/t to Reagan to Palin.

Palin’s scheduled appearance to speak at the Tea Party Convention in Nashville, TN this weekend has become controversial…

From Christian Science Monitor, As others bolt, Sarah Palin stands by ‘tea party’ convention:

Others have pulled out of this weekend’s Tea Party Nation convention in Nashville, Tenn., but Sarah Palin is staying the course.

Explaining her decision to speak at this weekend’s for-profit tea party event, Ms. Palin, the popular but often polarizing ex-vice presidential candidate, says in a USA Today column today that ”it’s important to keep faith with people who put a little bit of their faith in you.”

Palin writes she thought “long and hard” about the decision to headline the $349-a-plate lobster dinner after others like Rep. Michele Bachmann (R) of Minnesota pulled out citing questions brought up by the House Ethics Committee over the Tea Party Nation’s for-profit status.

Palin is set to receive a $100,000 speaker’s fee, but she writes that “any compensation for my appearance will go right back to the cause.” It’s likely to go to SarahPAC, her political action committee, which, among other things, is helping “tea party” backed Senate candidate Rand Paul in Kentucky.

…Palin gives the fractious tea party movement the appearance of legitimacy and heft at a time when both Republicans and Democrats are scrambling to figure out how much obeisance they will have to show in this year’s mid-term elections.

“Sarah Palin is becoming a figurehead of sorts for the tea party movement,” concludes the Wall Street Journal’s Susan Davis.

That role is only expanding. Palin is set to headline a number of events, including the kick off of the Tea Party Express III in Sen. Harry Reid’s hometown of Searchlight, Nev., and a planned appearance in Boston for an April tea party event.

“Though tea-party activists still tend to look askance at political professionals and the Republican Party as an institution, such veterans have provided strategic leadership, even on the grassroots level,” writes Newsweek’s Suzy Khimm.

Palin’s decision to stick with the program means excitement is building around the Tea Party Nation convention. Fox News has announced it will carry Palin’s speech, as will PJTV, the conservative online network.

Opening paragraph at Free Us Now Weblog, Why I’m speaking at Tea Party convention:

Many have bowed out of the Convention at Nashville because of the talk of money changing hands and price of a convention ticket. Sarah, believing this would hurt the grassroots movement in the long run, decided to support the Tea Party in spite of whatever happened to put a spanner in the works. This took a great deal of courage particularly because someone is always ready willing and able to attribute to her only the worst of intentions. True to form she put herself on the line and did what was best for the people. She will attend this rally and then Searchlight Nevada then Boston Massachusetts!

Palin has written a thoughtful response to her supporters and critics about why she’s chosen to speak at the convention, so be sure to pop over to the Free Us Now post for her explanation. Here’s a portion of it:

The soul of the Tea Party is the people who belong to it — everyday Americans who grow our food, run our small businesses, teach our children how to read, serve the less fortunate and fight our wars. They’re folks in small towns and cities across this nation who saw what was happening to our country and decided to get involved. Thank God for them. Many of these good Americans had never been involved in their government before, but now they attend town hall meetings and participate in online forums. They write letters to the editor. They sign up to be precinct leaders and run for local office and support other independent patriots. They have the courage to stand up and speak out.

Their vision is what drew me to the Tea Party movement. They believe in the same principles that guided my work in public service — whether I was working on the PTA and city council or serving as a mayor, commissioner or governor. I look forward to meeting some of these great Americans this weekend.

Recently, some have tried to portray this movement as a commercial endeavor rather than the grassroots uprising that it is. Those who do so don’t understand the frustration everyday Americans feel when they see their government mortgaging their children’s future with reckless spending. The spark of patriotic indignation that inspired those who fought for our independence and those who marched peacefully for civil rights has ignited once again. You can’t buy such a sentiment. You can’t AstroTurf it. It springs from love of country and the knowledge that we can make a difference if we just stand up and stand together.

I thought long and hard about my participation in this weekend’s event. At the end of the day, my decision came down to this: It’s important to keep faith with people who put a little bit of their faith in you. Everyone attending this event is a soldier in the cause. Some of them will be driving hundreds of miles to Nashville. I made a commitment to them to be there, and I am going to honor it.
