The Blizzard of 2010 is already being called “epic.” Many states in the eastern United States have declared a state of emergency.

Be smart, be safe.

From AccuWeather.com: Mid-Atlantic Blizzard Shutting Down Travel in the Big Cities:

Blizzard conditions, or at the very least, near white-out conditions will wallop the mid-Atlantic corridor from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia through southern New Jersey and the Delmarva Peninsula today. Travel will be extremely difficult to impossible throughout this zone.

Philadelphia’s snow will end up racking up to around a foot with areas south of the city getting up to 2 feet of snow.

Washington, D.C., had already been clobbered by more than a foot of snow by 6 a.m. EST on Saturday, and additional snowfall could bring the total to 2 feet in the city.

Baltimore was already buried by 18 inches of snow at 6 a.m., and the snow total may climb above 2 feet in the city before the storm is finished.

Winds gusting up to 50 mph in the mid-Atlantic will produce huge snow drifts–big enough to bury cars entirely. Significant blowing will make it hard for people to measure the snow, let alone, try to travel today.

The blowing and drifting of snow will keep road crews and shovelers busy long after the snow winds down. Stranded vehicles from people who tried to venture out in the storm will further hinder clean-up.

From Post-Gazette: Snowstorm piles it on Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania – Causes power outages, makes travel hazardous through region:

Ideally, you’re sitting in the comfort of your home right now, reading your favorite newspaper with the heater working and the refrigerator stocked.

And, if you’re following the advice of local authorities, you’re just going to hunker down and stay put.

Because of the snowstorm that blanketed the region with a projected 8 to 12 inches during the night, getting around today could be complicated at best and, at its worst, dangerous. A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service for Western Pennsylvania remains in effect through 6 tonight. Areas to the south and east of the city were expected to be hit hardest.

“It’s coming down thick, and we’re going to get it all night,” said Dave Bowers, a meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College, Centre County. “If you do decide to go out, you’re going to have a lot to dig out of.”

Early this morning the Port Authority announced it would offer limited service today because of continuing problems with road conditions.

Duquesne Light this morning was reporting some 45,550 customers without power today due to the storm. Most of the outages were scattered throughout Allegheny and Beaver counties with no estimated times for restoration.

The snow started falling Downtown just after noon and kept coming steadily into the evening. Four inches of snow was reported at Pittsburgh International Airport before 8 p.m.

From CNN: Travel grinds to halt after powerful mid-Atlantic snowstorm:

A powerful snowstorm pounded the nation’s capital and other mid-Atlantic states early Saturday, snarling down traffic and bringing travel to a virtual standstill.

Buses and above-ground rail services were suspended in Washington, and only underground trains would run Saturday, transportation officials said.

Cancellation of ground transportation comes a few hours after flights were canceled at the Washington-Baltimore area’s three main airports and at Philadelphia International Airport.

Delta Air Lines had suspended flights in and out of Washington, Baltimore, Maryland and Philadelphia, said Delta spokesman Anthony Black. There will be limited service to Philadelphia on Saturday, he said.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell declared a state of emergency Friday night and ordered all vehicles off the roads by 10 p.m. ET.

Forecasters were predicting that the mountains of West Virginia and Maryland, west of the nation’s capital, would receive the most snow — possibly 3 feet.

“Tomorrow will be a day when everybody’s digging out,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said. “And Sunday, for that matter, too.”

Accumulations of 20 to 30 inches are expected in the D.C. area. It could turn out to be one of the heaviest snowfalls Washington has seen, forecasters said.

From Khabrein.info: State of emergency Pennsylvania, snow emergency levels in Ohio: snowfall freezes life:

A record snow fall threatens life in the U.S. mid Atlantic areas, following a powerful storm on Friday. People in these areas are to suffer a lot as they are heavily dependent on heating oil and natural gas supplies.

According to weather forecasts, a 20 to 30 inches of snow is expected to fall during the season. The tight weather conditions in areas of Virginia to southern New Jersey has prompted U.S. government offices in the Washington area to shut their doors four hours early.

Following the snow falls, the Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo will remain closed Saturday. Several schools have been closed.

Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia each declared emergencies due to snow fall.

In this next video, a Maryland couple welcomed a new addition to their family at Washington, DC’s Howard University Hospital. The couple had scheduled a Cesarean section for Saturday, but opted to arrive at the hospital a day early to avoid the snow storm.

From InTheNews.co.uk: Huge snow storms hit east coast USA:

A huge blizzard has hit the eastern mid-Atlantic states of the US, with forecasters urging people not to leave their homes due to the “extremely hazardous” conditions.

At least 25cm of snow fell in Washington DC, shutting down transport and businesses as weather forecasters predicted more severe weather could be on the way for the capital.

The ‘snowpocalypse’, as local media are deeming the severe weather, has seen extreme warnings issued in parts of New Jersey and Delaware, with parts of New York and North Carolina also expected to be hit.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in the US said: “Heavy snows will continue this morning over large portions of the mid-Atlantic, with blizzard conditions over portions of central to northern Maryland, eastward across portions of the Delmarva peninsular and coastal south-eastern New Jersey.

“Additional snow totals of a foot are possible across portions of the mid-Atlantic, bringing storm totals to 18-36 inches. Snow across the Ohio valley region will begin to diminish this morning with only a few additional inches expected.”

The NWS added that this extremely dangerous storm is expected to produce record snowfall for the Washington DC metropolitan area, and travel conditions will be “extremely hazardous and life-threatening, and all citizens are urged to remain indoors”.

From Coshocton [Ohio] Tribune: Winter storm to continue today:

Coshocton County remains under a Level Two snow emergency this morning after snow blanketed the region. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m.

Dispatchers with the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office say they haven’t had to handle many accidents, as people are staying off the roads. Roadways conditions are not favorable, however, with four-foot drifts and impassible township roads being reported.

As of 9:30 a.m., more than 45,000 AEP Ohio customers — including 1,056 in Coshocton County — were without power this morning as heavy snow brought down tree branches and power lines. Paul Prater, community affairs manager with AEP, said power is expected to be restored to 95 percent of those affected by 6 p.m. Sunday. “There are big outages on certain circuits, and it’s difficult to get into places to assess the damage,” he said. “Some roads are not passable, especially in rural locations. Our crews are out doing the best they can. Be patient and try to stay warm, it’s going to be a while.”

From WRTV Indianapolis, Winter Storm Leaves Mark On Indiana:

A massive winter storm plowed across central Indiana Friday and Friday night, dumping up to 10 inches of snow and leaving behind snow drifts up to 4 feet high.

Light snow flurries fell Saturday morning, capping off the biggest snowfall of the season for much of the region.

About 10 inches of snow fell northeast of Indianapolis, with large snow drifts reported in Delaware County.
