Snowmaggedon, Snowzilla, Blizzard of 2010, Worst Storm on Record… this record-breaking winter storm that has ravaged America’s northern and eastern states goes by many names, and it has broken another record. That of closing down the US government for 4-1/2 days in a row. Unprecedented.

It doesn’t help matters that one-quarter of DC’s snow plows are broken…

From Washington Post: Snow forces federal government to close Thursday:

Federal agencies across the nation’s capital will close Thursday for a fourth straight day after closing early on Friday — taking the shutdown into uncharted territory.

The 1995 and 1996 budget impasses kept workers away for weeks, and bad weather closed offices for three consecutive days in January 1996 — but 4 1/2 consecutive snow days is unheard of.

From Gather.com, Federal Government Closed Thursday with record snow storms known as Snowzilla keeping employees home:

The huge snowstorm, known on the east coast as Snowzilla once again has OPM declare the Federal Government closed Thursday. This is the fifth day in a row that the Federal Government hasn’t been in the office to perform tasks for the people of the United States.

Snowzilla, still dumping snow as late as Wednesday night has given record snow fall recording for the Washington DC area as well as the states in the area. Declared the worst snow blizzard on record, people have no choice but to wait it out and start working again once it lets up.

According to CNN the past five days off work in the Federal Government will put the business performed on a daily basis behind two weeks. Hopefully everyone will get back to work and catch up a little faster!

The homeless are in tremendous discomfort and danger in the nation’s capital as the city hits sub-zero temperatures… reported by AlJazeeraEnglish:

Those hardest hit in what was worst snow storm to strike Washington DC in 30 years were the district’s homeless.

While most DC residents found warmth and comfort in their homes in the wake of “Snowmageddon”, for Washington’s six thousand homeless people the storm was a life-threatening situation.

The US capital does have an emergency hypothermia hotline during winter months and volunteers are taking action to help, but finding enough shelters to accommodate the large number of homeless has proved challenging.

From Associated Content, Washington DC Blizzard Update: Federal Government, Metro Closings and More:

OPM announced that the Federal government will be closed Thursday.

The Office of Personnel Management will announce shortly after 6 p.m. whether or not the Federal government will be closed again Thursday, following the second blizzard to strike Washington DC in a week. All bets here are for a shutdown given the status of roadways and Metro.

A critical factor in any Federal government snow emergency decision is whether Metro is up and running. 35 to 40% of the Washington, DC based Federal workforce relies on Metro to get to work. More than a million DC area resident ride Metro rail and bus daily.

From Time, Snow Is No Longer a Joking Matter in Washington:

At this rate, the flinty toughness that President Obama has tweaked Washington for lacking when it comes to winter weather may soon be forged through sheer necessity. Another epic blizzard hammered Washington on Wednesday morning, paralyzing anew a city that was still struggling to dig out from a storm that dumped some two feet of snow on the nation’s capital over the weekend. The frigid blast, which is expected to blanket Washington’s beleaguered residents with another 10 inches or more, left travelers stranded, shuttered airports, snarled rail and road traffic and brought the federal government (yet again) to a standstill.

From Los Angeles Public Relations:

For the States of New York, Maryland, Virginia and D.C. have been suffering a huge blow from the snow this winter. The snow has caused passengers to be stranded, leaving people to have to wait for life to begin again for them, as everything has halted to a stand still.

The snow storm which has been deemed the biggest reported in the decade, has a lot of States who are very cash strapped worrying about their budgets. As where there is barely enough to cover the costs of getting the snow removed from the roads leaves not much else for any other needs of the States.

And in New York…

From NY1, Snow Mode: City Schools Closed; Plow Crews Line Up:

With up to a foot of snow expected to fall across the city today, the Department of Education has cancelled all classes and all city buses are making local stops.

So far, about five to eight inches have fallen in the five boroughs, and New Yorkers are experiencing windy blizzard conditions. Tonight, wind chills will go down to the teens.

So, Al Gore, how’s that “global warming” workin’ for ya?
