Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow….

With once-in-a-lifetime snow falling in Dallas and other areas of Texas — and frozen iguanas falling from trees in Florida — we now have snow in all 50 US states. Snow is still falling in areas of the southern United States.

From WGN Weather Center, Tim’s Weather World: Snow In All 50 States?:

Snow fell yesterday in the deep south blanketing Dallas with almost 8 inches. Snow also fell in Jackson, Mississippi. This southern stream storm is expected to produce snow in such unlikely areas as Pensacola, Florida & Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. By the end of the day, there could be snow on the ground in all 50 states. Yes, even Hawaii has snow. Don’t forget that Mauna Loa is nearly 14,000 feet high and can get snow any time between August and May.

From eCanadaNow, No Snow In Vancouver, But There Is In 50 US States:

Snow in all 50 states?

While Olympic officials are scrambling to ensure there is enough snow for the Vancouver Winter Olympics, many parts of the United States are seeing more than their share of the white stuff.

As odd as it may seem, if reports are accurate, this calendar year will be the first in quite a while where there has seen “snow cover” at some location in all 50 of the United States. Reports from the panhandle of Florida indicates that they are seeing some wet snow today, and that enough of it is falling, and it is cool enough that the snow could even stick. While most people don’t envision snow falling in such southern states, an especially wet and cold winter has spread the white stuff out to everyone.

UPDATE: At this point today, deviating from the February norm, Hawaii is reportedly without snow on either of its two tallest volcanoes… so the title for this post should be changed to “And Then, There Were 49.” I’ll wait, though, to make the correction — the day isn’t yet over.

UPDATE, February 19, 2010: Hawaii finally cooperated, now has snow, so the title above is, at last, accurate, although a week premature. Read more about the record snow at Gateway Pundit: Brrrr… Snow Observed in ALL 50 States at the Same Time.

From Examiner Albuquerque, Once-in-lifetime snow for Dallas and all of north Texas:

North Texas was buried beneath a once-in-lifetime snow as the morning of Feb 12, 2010 dawned.

In fact, it exceeded the all-time 24 hour snowfall total of 12.1″, which had stood since 1964.

The official total for the NWS stands at 12.5″ Of this, 11.2″ fell on Feb 11th, which is a daily (not 24-hour) record and tops for a February snow as well.

The winter of 2009-2010 now ranks as 2nd snowiest on record behind 1977-78 by just a couple of inches.

From Breitbart, Rare snowflakes start falling from Miss. to Fla.:

(AP) – It took back-to-back blizzards to paralyze the nation’s capital, but in the Deep South it only takes a couple inches of snow.

Flakes were falling—or threatened—Friday from Texas to the Florida Panhandle and then up along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina, bringing a rare white landscape to spots that haven’t seen snow in a decade or longer. The storm was crawling east out of Texas, where it left the Dallas area with more than a foot of snow, nearly 200 traffic accidents, thousands without power and hundreds of canceled flights.

Far less snow was falling in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, though the effect was still crippling.

Just the anticipation of an inch of snow was enough to close schools in the Florida Panhandle, while classes also were canceled in parts of Alabama. Nearly two-dozen school districts closed across Georgia because of the snow forecast.

In Century, about 40 miles north of Pensacola, 44-year-old Steve Pace scraped some snow from the hood of his truck and formed a snowball to throw at his 6-year-old grandson, Kaleb. It only snowed for about 10 minutes before giving way to rain again, but it was enough for Kaleb.

“I’ve only ever seen snow on TV till now,” Kaleb said, smiling.

Snow and was still coming down Friday morning in southwest Alabama, with as much as 2 inches already on the ground, said George T. Moss, owner of the 15-room Timberland Motel in Chatom, about 60 miles north of Mobile.

From Christian Science Monitor, Snow in all 50 states? New storm could make that true:

…This has been one of the most bizarre winters of the new century, with storm after storm slamming the East Coast in particular. And now, a storm that dropped a foot of snow Thursday on Dallas – Dallas! – could help bring about the presence of snow in all 50 states.

That’s if the storm delivers a few inches, as expected, in parts of north Florida. If that indeed happens, meteorologists at AccuWeather and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say they expect some coverage in all 50 states.

(In case you’re wondering, some of the tallest peaks in Hawaii have snow sprinkled on them.)

“By the time the storm ends, we may be looking at a truly historic snow cover map to open up the weekend,” AccuWeather.com’s Joe Lundberg writes.

[...]

Other notable events in this topsy-turvy season: The South saw one of the first big storms, frozen iguanas fell out of trees in Florida, and snowfall records were broken in a dozen cities including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington.

And winter is barely halfway over. (Punxsutawney Phil, after all, said we have at least six more weeks of winter to go.)

From Dallas Morning News, Snow putting damper on NBA All-Star events:

Neither snow, nor slush, nor sleet, nor gloom of ice shall keep the hardcore NBA fan from soaking up the All-Star basketball action in North Texas.

But Thursday’s snowfall made it treacherous for some who ventured to the opening day of the NBA All-Star Jam Session at the Dallas Convention Center.

Today might not be any easier, as the slush from Thursday night was expected to freeze, creating potentially icy driving conditions.

It’s a good thing most of the events leading up to Sunday’s All-Star Game are happening indoors.

At the opening ceremonies, NBA Commissioner David Stern cracked: “A little snow … I’m from New York. Don’t sweat it.”

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban were among those to join Stern for the festivities. Jam Session attendance Thursday was a little lighter than at Wednesday’s private event.

“We, of course, have added a snowball fight and a snowman-making contest,” Cuban joked.

From ESPN Dallas /Fort Worth, NBA monitoring travel issues for players:

DALLAS — Despite the snowstorm that belted North Texas on Thursday, NBA officials said events surrounding All-Star Weekend are still on schedule.

The National Weather Service said a winter storm warning is in effect for the Dallas/Fort Worth area until midnight Thursday with an estimated snowfall accumulation of 4-6 inches by Thursday night.

Injuries to All-Stars like Los Angeles Lakers forward Kobe Bryant (sore left ankle) and Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose (bruised right hip) have been topics of discussion, but now weather — and how it might affect travel plans, especially for those coming from the East Coast — might be the story.

“All of the events and activities are on schedule and have not been impacted by the weather,” Tim Frank, NBA senior vice president for basketball communications, said Thursday. “As far as players, hopefully not. But we’ll be monitoring it.”

Players scheduled to participate in the All-Star Game and other NBA-related activities are expected to arrive in Dallas on Thursday and Friday.

“We’ve had weather issues in the past, and players keep us up to date on their travel schedules,” Frank said.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said when he and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones partnered up to bring the game to North Texas, weather concerns were a small factor.

“Never considered we would have a snowstorm,” Cuban said in an e-mail to ESPNDallas on Thursday morning. “I’m not worried about events taking place. I’m worried about people driving and getting around. Hopefully the roads will be OK.”
