Earthquake Today… in New Jersey
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on February 21, 2010
I grew up in Southern California, so a 2.6 earthquake is really much ado about nothing to me. However, in Jersey… I can imagine that it’s plenty scary.
Any out-of-the-norm earthquake, in the aftermath of Haiti’s colossal earthquake last month, will likely rattle even the most stoic New Jerseyian.
From BeforeItsNews, NJ Earthquake Minor 2.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Peapack Gladstone Bernardsville Area:
New York, NY – A minor 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck this morning in the Peapack Gladstone area of New Jersey. The NJ Earthquake was minor with little damage and no injuries or deaths reported.
The location of the NJ earthquake was approximately 40 miles west of New York City. The earthquake struck at 8:59 AM.
Approximately 100 people called Bernardsville police shortly after the quake struck. Some stated it felt like a loud rumble then an explosion like sound followed.
The area received a 1.5 magnitude earthquake in January. The general area sits on the Ramapo Fault Line.

From The Alternative Press: 2.6 Earthquake Shakes Bernardsville and at Least 25 More Zipcodes:
BERNARDSVILLE, NJ – Sunday morning reverie at 8:59 a.m. was punctuated by a big boom in Bernardsville- and Basking Ridge- and at least 25 more zip codes, according to the US Geological Survey. Within an hour, an earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale was confirmed by the Lamont Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network (LCSN). The quake was centered at Peapack and Gladstone, New Jersey, 13 miles WSW of Morristown.
In Bernardsville, the quake was experienced as a ‘boom. BOOM!!! shake.’ In this reporter’s old stone cottage, the shaking rang bells. The quake shook Bernardsville Police headquarters, where Dispatcher 35 was fielding calls from residents, and cautioning that an aftershock may follow. No damage was immediately reported, although an earthquake of mild magnitude can cause hairline cracks in structures.
Lamont Doherty estimates the depth of the quake at 3.1 miles, and measures the impact as mild, at ll-lV in intensity. Still, residents were excited and rattled.
The Sunday morning earthquake follows a series of tremors that moved the ground in Far Hills and Bernardsville from Friday, February 5th to Sunday, February 7th. One of those quakes measured 1.2, but Sunday morning’s 2.6 is orders of intensity greater.

When I was stationed in the Philippines, I felt three, probably between 3 or 4, enough to move things around in the barracks.
In one instance I was walking and the ground wasn’t where it should have been.
Kinda like stepping into a depression, but no depression existed.
Very strange feeling, when you turn around to see where the hole was, and no hole exists.
The islands were prone to earthquakes, and at the first sign of rumblings, the natives would clear out of the structures.
This was within an 18 month period.
