Sarah Palin on Leno, Interview & Stand-up Comedy… Pummels Letterman in the Ratings (video)
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on March 3, 2010
Sarah Palin has given Jay Leno a wonderful gift… that of The Tonight Show beating David Letterman in the late-night talk show “battle of the ratings.”
I find it even more satisfying that Letterman, who in his not-so-very-funny years as an aging, egomanical comedian, goes out of his way to mock and malign Palin… poetic justice here.
From Media Decoder, On Second Night, Leno Again Beats Letterman:
Jay Leno had a solid second night back on “The Tonight Show” Tuesday night, thanks in part to a special opening monologue from his lead guest, Sarah Palin.
Mr. Leno easily won the late-night ratings competition across the board with 5.8 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among the 18-49 audience that NBC always points to as the main measure of success (because of advertiser preferences for that group.)
The younger-adult rating matched Mr. Leno’s Monday night number, one indication that Ms. Palin helped maintain the tune-in factor from Mr. Leno’s first night back. He dropped slightly fewer than 1 million viewers from Monday, when he reached 6.6 million people.
In both categories he dominated his longtime competitor, David Letterman, who reached 3.7 million viewers Tuesday and had a 1 rating in the 18-49 group. Both numbers were not atypical for Mr. Letterman, which may mean Mr. Leno is bringing in viewers who had not regularly been watching the late-night shows recently.
ABC’s “Nightline,” which only gets measured for a half-hour vs. a full hour for the other two shows, trailed with 3.3 million viewers and a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 measure.

From TV By The Numbers, Updated: Leno (With Palin) Beats Letterman Badly Again On Night Two:
The second night of Jay Leno’s Tonight Show v 2.0 dominated late night again with a 4.6 household rating/12 share in early household metered markets data from 11:30p-12:30a to Letterman’s The Late Show 3.1 rating/ 8 share. ABC’s Nightline had a 3.0 rating / 7 share and Jimmy Kimmel Live trailed with a 1.7 rating / 5 share.
From CBC, Palin wisecracks on Tonight Show:
Former Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin turned into a standup comic on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show, dropping one-liners about the White House, Congress and Tina Fey — the 30 Rock and former Saturday Night Live star known for her impression of the ex-Alaska governor.
Palin joked that she’s going to play Fey in an upcoming Las Vegas show.
She told Leno’s audience she planned to speak at a gun-rights convention: “Be there or else,” she warned them.
She said Alaska is different than California. In Los Angeles, “when people have a frozen look on their face, I find out it’s Botox.”
And she’s happy she’s not vice-president. “I would not know what to do with all that free time,” she quipped.
In remarks taped for broadcast later Tuesday, Palin said the White House health-care plan reminds her of acrobatic flips done by Olympic snowboard champion Shaun White. And she joked that it’s so cold in Alaska it’s “five degrees below Congress’ approval rating.”
She had some fun at her own expense, too.
Palin became fodder for late-night TV jokes when she was spotted looking at notes written on her palm during a speech in Nashville, Tenn. She said she picked up the habit years ago from her father, a teacher, and “I’m going to keep doing it.”
Earlier, she flashed her palm, which had, “Good evening and welcome to The Tonight Show” written on it.
Loved the “free time” mention… poor underworked VP Joe Biden, eh?
