Mega-Icy News: Frozen Like Popsicles, Growing Number of Ships Trapped in Ice in Baltic Sea Near Sweden
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on March 4, 2010
Mother Nature just isn’t letting up with her winter vengeance.
The junk-science IPCC myths and fabrications of man-caused global warming are being diminished every day. Stories about record European storms, hurricane-strength winds, the US East Coast being hammered by more record snowfall and blizzard conditions, record cold has been reported all around the world, and right now, numerous ships are unable to move in the Baltic Sea because THEY’RE FROZEN LIKE POPSICLES.
Yes, POPSICLES. How can this be, if we’re going through “certain-death-unless-we-are-taxed-to-our-eyeballs global warming,” Mr. Gore? Do you have a science-based response that doesn’t involve shedding a few crocodile tears about polar bears?
Or, how about we just blame George W. Bush and ignore what we see and what science proves? Works great for Al Gore.
Repeat after me: Global warming is a lie. Global warming is a hoax. Politicians can’t tax global cooling.
More than 50 ships, including large ferries reportedly carrying thousands of passengers, were stuck in ice in the Baltic Sea Thursday evening, and many were not likely to be freed for hours, Swedish maritime authorities said.
From Associated Press, Ferries stuck in ice in Baltic Sea; 1,100 on board:
STOCKHOLM — Nearly 1,100 people were trapped Thursday on two passenger ferries and two cargo ships that got stuck in ice Thursday in the Baltic Sea off Sweden’s east coast, and rescuers were on standby to evacuate them if needed, officials said.
Ice breakers in the area were trying to free the ships, but gale-force winds were hampering the effort, the Swedish Maritime Administration said.
“As soon as they break the ice, it freezes over again,” sea rescue spokesman Peter Lindquist said. He said no one was hurt and there were no immediate plans to bring people off the ships, but helicopters and military hovercraft were on standby in case evacuations would become necessary.
The Maritime Administration said one of the ships was the Amorella, a passenger ferry with 943 people on board. It belongs to Viking Line, which operates Baltic Sea cruises between Sweden and Finland.
The other ships were the smaller Via Mare ferry carrying 66 people, the roll-on-roll-off ferry Sea Wind with 32 people and the Regal Star, a cargo ship with 56 people on board, officials said.
They were all stuck in the ice at the edge of archipelago which is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the mainland.
Two other ferries that got stuck in the ice were able to break free earlier Thursday.
One of those ships, the Finnfellow, collided lightly with the Amorella when the ice pressed the two ships together, but there was no major damage to either ship, Lindquist said. “Just some paint that was scratched off,” he said.
From CNN, Passenger ships stuck in ice off Sweden:
(CNN) — Thirty to 40 ships — including several passenger ships — were stuck Thursday in ice off the coast of Sweden, said a spokesman for the Maritime Search and Rescue Center in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The area of the Baltic Sea worst hit by the ice were the waters bounded by mainland Sweden, the Stockholm archipelago and the Finnish island of Aland, said Tommy Gardebring, press officer with the Swedish Maritime Administration.
The center identified one of the passenger ships as the Amorella, with 753 passengers and 190 crew members.
Several passenger vessels from Viking Line were stuck, he said. One of them had been freed.
“It has been a lot colder than normal in the southern parts of the Baltic sea, but in the north all is normal with normal levels of ice,” Gardebring said. “However, in the worst-affected areas, the ice breakers that normally operate haven’t been able to cope with the ice, which is why we are sending additional ice breakers.”
The extra help was expected to arrive around midnight (6 p.m. ET), he said.
“There was never any danger for the safety of the vessels, but we have increased our preparedness, just in case, since the ice puts a lot of pressure on the sides of the ships,” Gardebring said.
He predicted that most of the ships would be freed by Friday.
I was wondering if this was a common or uncommon event, so I looked into the Baltic Sea and ice info:
The Baltic Sea is a brackish inland sea, allegedly the largest body of brackish water in the world (other possibilities include the Black Sea and Hudson Bay). The Baltic Sea occupies a basin formed by glacial erosion during the last few Ice Ages.
On the long-term average, the Baltic Sea is ice covered for about 45% of its surface area at the maximum annually. The ice-covered area during such a typical winter includes the Gulf of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Riga, Väinameri in the Estonian archipelago, the Stockholm archipelago and the Archipelago Sea. The remainder of the Baltic itself does not freeze during a normal winter, with the exception of sheltered bays and shallow lagoons such as the Curonian Lagoon. The ice reaches its maximum extent in February or March; typical ice thickness in the northernmost areas in the Bothnian Bay, the northern basin of the Gulf of Bothnia, is about 70 cm (28 in) for landfast sea ice. The thickness decreases farther south.
Freezing begins in the northern coast of Gulf of Bothnia typically in middle of November, reaching the open waters of Bothnian Bay in early January. The Bothnian Sea, the basin south of it, freezes on average in late February. The Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Riga freeze typically in late January.
The ice extent depends on whether the winter is mild, moderate or severe. Severe winters can lead to ice formation around Denmark and southern Sweden. According to William Derham during the severe winters of 1703 and 1708 the ice cover permeated as far as the Danish straits, parts of the Bay of Bothnia and Gulf of Finland, in addition to coastal fringes in more southerly locations such as the Gulf of Riga. In recent years a typical winter produces only ice in the northern and eastern extremities of the Sea. In 2007 there was almost no ice formation except for a short period in March.
So, while the Baltic Sea does indeed freeze in areas every year, this appears to be unpredictable and contingent upon many factors. And it was almost non-existent in 2007, but popsicle-cold this week.
