Unemployment at 35-Year-High in Florida, Jumps to Record 12.6% in South Carolina

The dismal unemployment numbers in Florida — and in Texas — will only get worse once Team Obama shuts down some of NASA’s space programs: Obama’s Budget: Moon Mission Cut, Thousands of NASA Workers Will Lose Jobs, Houston & Florida Will Be Hit Hard with Unemployment (video). A post at Flopping Aces cites that up to 23,000 more jobs could be killed in Florida.
South Carolina’s unemployment numbers are also at a record high.
This was reported today at Florida’s Sun Sentinel, Florida’s unemployment rate at 35-year high:
Florida’s unemployment rate in January hit 11.9 percent, matching the peak in the 1974-75 recession, the state work force agency reported Wednesday.
The good news is the rate of decline in jobs seems to be slowing.
“We have begun to stabilize,” said Tony Villamil, economist and business dean at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. Yet the recovery is fragile, Villamil said, and further job loss in municipalities and potentially more than 4,000 jobs at Miami-Dade County’s Jackson Healthcare System are key risks.
There are more than 13,000 nursing jobs open in the state, according to The Conference Board. But generally, hospitals have been shedding, not adding, jobs.
“As an RN, I’m finding it difficult to get a job. Just 18 months to two years ago, it was so easy to find a job. How do they expect you to get experience if you don’t have a job?” said Marisa Agnant, 31, of Coral Springs, who graduated from Broward College in nursing in May 2009. She has applied in several states for a nursing job.
Meanwhile, the unemployed in Florida and across the nation got welcome news from the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, which passed an extension to unemployment benefits and health-insurance subsidies through the end of the year. The legislation now goes to the House, which will either have to take up the Senate legislation or lawmakers from both chambers will have to meet to iron out differences between their versions of legislation.
Sean Snaith, economist at the University of Central Florida, said the scars from the recession are long and deep in Florida. “There will be some job growth through the end of the year, but I expect it to be pretty weak,” he said.
From GoUpstate.com, SC’s jobless rate at record high 12.6 percent:
South Carolina’s jobless rate hit a record 12.6 percent in January, up from December’s revised rate of 12.4 percent, the S.C. Employment Security Commission reported Wednesday.
The number of unemployed state residents rose by 4,605 people during the month to settle at 273,455, compared with 268,800 people the previous month.
Nationally, the unemployment rate fell to 9.7 percent in January, compared with December’s 10 percent rate. South Carolina had the fourth-highest rate in the country behind Michigan (14.3), Nevada (13.0) and Rhode Island (12.7).
In Spartanburg County, the jobless rate jumped eight-tenths of a percentage point to 13.8 percent in January.
Steve Caldwell, spokesman for the commission’s Spartanburg Workforce Center, said the increase in local unemployment numbers was likely because of employers cutting back after the holiday shopping season.

The socialistic state that Obama envisioned is coming to pass.
No matter what he says about job growth, the economy, health care, etc. is all blow.
He considers the American People fools, servants to his cause.
Putty in his hands, ignoring the poll numbers, dissing politicians that have far more experience than he does, flying all around the country making an endless attempt to promote his socialistic platform to the now majority of informed citizens who do not want the bill to pass.
He made a comment in St. Louis, (paraphrased) They can’t wear me down, I will wear them down.
Barry, WE WILL WEAR YOU OUT !!!
This is America !
You better wake up child.
