Pelosi’s Woodstock Flashback: Peace, Love, & ObamaCare Will Let You Quit Your Day Job to Be an Artist or Writer!

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's having a Woodstock flashback... peace, love, quit your job, thanks to ObamaCare! What is she smoking these days?

Good grief, what is Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi smoking these days to say that under ObamaCare, artists, writers, photographers, you name it, don’t have to be “job-locked” and worry about having a day job to have government-run health care? Is this a freaky Woodstock flashback, and has she been seen talking to unicorns?

Totally groovy, man…

From Rush Limbaugh, March 12, 2010 EIB Network radio broadcast, Pelosi: We Must Pass Obamacare So Artists Can Quit Their Day Jobs:

RUSH: Now, I want to play this sound bite again from Nancy Pelosi. This is what Democrats are fighting for. Nancy Pelosi, this idiot Pelosi, thinks this country is Woodstock or Moscow or something. Listen to this.

PELOSI: Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or, eh, a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance, or that people could start a business and be entrepreneurial and take risk but not [be] job-locked because a child has asthma or someone in the family is bipolar. You name it. Any condition is job-blocking.

RUSH: So they’re fighting for people to be able to quit work while the rest of us pay for their health care while they go out and be artists and photographers and tend to bipolar kids with asthma or what have you, and we’re going to pay for this. This idiot thinks this is Woodstock. I mean, it’s right out of the San Francisco mentality. It’s just breathtaking here.

From Mary Katharine Ham, NRO, Pelosi’s Republic:

From Rachel Maddow’s show last night, here’s a jaw-dropper from the woman who brought you, “We have to pass the bill, so you can find out what’s in it.” As I keep saying, the Democratic message mavens are working overtime, apparently to woo the all-important swing vote in Williamsburg to health care:

“Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance.”

If Pelosi wants us to imagine it, let’s do it with a few caveats, shall we? If liberal Boomers such as Nancy Pelosi insist on creating government incentives for a generation of people to be unemployed artists who nonetheless have their health care paid for by productive members of society, there will be fewer productive members of society.

If they insist on creating a generation unable to care for itself up to and past the ripe old age of 26 by incentivizing “children”—and I use to term loosely— to stay on parent’s health insurance policies until they’re turning the corner from Clearasil to Botox, there will be fewer educated, able-bodied people who ever learn to take care of themselves.

If they insist on creating a generation incentivized to “move out of the money-making industry” entirely and “into the helping industry,” as Michelle Obama put it, with student loans forgiven by government if and only if students stay away from icky, profit-making industries, there will be fewer people making a profit.

From Power Line, The Job Locker:

…Nobody said it better than John Lennon: “Imagine all the people, living life in peace.”

What on earth does Pelosi mean? Pelosi refers to “job locking.” I assume she means the phenomenon of employees holding onto their jobs for fear of losing access to health insurance. Does Pelosi mean that artists and photographers who are “locked” into their day jobs will now be able to quit them? Because underwriting is prohibited under Obamacare and they no longer need worry about the exclusion of preexisting conditions from coverage? Perhaps.

But what if the artists and photographers can’t afford to purchase Obamacare without their day jobs? That is the “job locking” with which most of us out here in the real world are familiar. Will Obamacare lighten the load we’re carrying? Answer: No. It will lock us to our jobs longer and more deeply.

In any event, artists and photographers who unshackle themselves from their jobs still have a problem under Obamacare. They are required to purchase Obamacare insurance under both the House and Senate bills. Beginning in 2014, the Senate bill requires individuals to purchase a government-approved plan or pay a penalty. By 2016, the annual penalty would amount to $750 or 2 percent of income, whichever is greater. The tax penalty, indexed for inflation, increases over time. (According to the linked Times squib, there is no penalty if the cost of the cheapest available plan exceeds 8 percent of household income.)

This woman is entirely out of touch with a real world. The best I can hope for is that she will no longer be speaker after November. She’s so stupid she’s dangerous.

It probably never occured to Pelosi what would happen if many health care workers diecided to quit their day jobs and become artists or writers.
