Cherry blossoms blooming in Washington, DC

Washington, DC’s Cherry Blossom Festival for 2010 is now underway, from today through April 11, 2010… many free events are offered during the festival, which should delight economically strapped families. Even though the cherry trees are only in bloom for a short while, the festival draws in millions of tourists from all over the United States to see the nation’s capitol surrounded in gorgeous pink and white flowers.

From the Thrifty Maven, Cherry Blossom Festival:

The National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift to the city of Washington of 3000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo. It is supposed to match-up with the peak bloom of these beautiful trees but having grown up in DC I can testify that this is not always the case. It may be the hometown girl in me but I happen to think that DC is a beautiful city and the Cherry Blossoms only add to it.

As always the Cherry Blossom Festival offers many FREE events and if you live near a metro station it’s worth grabbing the kids and heading downtown to take some in some of the festivities.

You can find the complete 2010 Schedule of Events on the NationalCherryBlossomFestival.org site and on the National Park Service site.

From WJZ, via the Maryland AP, Cherry Blossom Festival Opens Saturday In DC:

WASHINGTON (AP) ― The National Cherry Blossom Festival is kicking off with a day of family events at the National Building Museum.

The day begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and will feature musical performances, artists and activities at the museum for the fifth consecutive year.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will feature a performance by the Washington Ballet and others.

The blooming period for the trees is expected to run from Sunday through April 9. National Park Service horticulturist Robert DeFeo has predicted the peak blooming period will be April 1 to April 4.

The festival parade is set for April 10, followed by a Japanese street festival.

From Sweet Iced Tea:

…As a third grader my family lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, for what seems like now just a blip of time. During those few months we made it up to Washington, DC to visit the most awe inspiring blooms one can witness in a lifetime. I am much, much older now but I can still remember the pink and white petals in the trees. The clear, blue sky, slight chill in the air and monuments made for the perfect day as we sat and enjoyed the people watching and the beauty…

I'm a conservative frugalist. My priorities: Watchdogging the government, making sure our tax dollars are spent wisely, living within our budgets (at home and in Washington, DC), and adhering to our Constitution and the conservative principles upon which it was developed by our founding fathers. Also, loving God, my family, and my country. Be wise, be frugal. God bless America!
