Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on March 29, 2010
This information about singer Ricky Martin coming out of the closet on his blog is exploding all over the Internet…
From TMZ, Ricky Martin — ‘I Am a Fortunate Homosexual’:
Ricky Martin has revealed that he is a gay man.
Martin — who has dodged questions of his sexuality for years — just posted the following message on his official website: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”
Martin says the birth of his twin sons led to his decision to come out — and according to the singer, “To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where [sic] born with.”
Ricky’s kids were born in August 2008.
From Rolling Stone, Yep, He’s Gay: Ricky Martin Comes Out of the Closet:
After years of speculation over his sexual orientation, Ricky Martin has come out of the closet in a posting on his official website (via TMZ). In a lengthy note to his fans published in Spanish and English, Martin says writing his memoirs got him “very close to my truth” and that hiding his sexuality any longer would “indirectly diminish the glow that my kids here born with,” referring to his twin sons, who were born in 2008 to a surrogate mother.
“These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed,” he writes, addressing inevitable questions about why he didn’t reveal his sexuality earlier.
From HillBuzz, Whoo-hoo! Ricky Martin comes out, as “a fortunate homosexual man”:
Every club in Boystown is blaring La Vida Loca tonight, folks. Martin will now enjoy a career resurgence, especially if he starts shaking it up at Pride festivals and Market Days-type fests across the country this summer. He will be as embraced by the community, and as loved, as Neil Patrick Harris is. Good on him.
We’ve always really liked the guy — and it’s wonderful he’s stepped forward and admitted who he is.
Some of you out there don’t know how important this is, or how destructive the closet can be. The more famous people that come forward, especially men, and admit who they are the easier it is for young gays to be themselves, and to find acceptance in their families.
With entertainers, we believe coming out is 100% their call and we don’t agree with outing actors, singers, and others who make their living off their image, and do everything they can to craft an image to sell tickets, get the best ratings, and otherwise profit in the image-heavy, agent-managed, world of Hollywood.
Guys who are obvious closet cases, who have become jokes in the gay community, are people we, too, joke about. Tom Cruise and John Travolta, anyone? They are the Rock Hudson and Liberace of our time — so we’re not breaking any news there.
From MercuryNews.com, People: Ricky Martin confirms he’s gay:
In a blog posting on his Web site, singer Ricky Martin came out over the weekend, confirming he’s gay.
In related news, the Pacific Ocean posted on its Facebook page that it is, in fact, wet.
Martin spoke about his fears, writing: “Many people told me: ‘Ricky it’s not important,’ ‘it’s not worth it,’ ‘all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse,’ ‘many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature.’ Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.”
Take it easy, Ricky. We already knew.
Martin famously declined to answer’s Barbara Walters’ aggressive questions about his sexuality 10 years ago. But he’s not being evasive anymore. The “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer continues, “These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed.”
From The Hollywood Gossip, Ricky Martin Comes Out as “Fortunate” Gay Man:
The Puerto Rican singer, who is planning to write a memoir about his life, says the birth of his twin sons (via surrogate) led to his decision to come out.
Ricky’s kids were born in August 2008, and similar to Clay Aiken, he says he did not want to live a lie while raising a child … in Ricky’s case two of them.
His coming out statement is well-written and at times poignant. You have to respect the honesty and emotion behind it, along with Martin’s reasoning …
“A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life.
From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside.
Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth.
And this is something worth celebrating.
For many years, there has been only one place where I am in touch with my emotions fearlessly and that’s the stage. Being on stage fills my soul in many ways, almost completely. It’s my vice. The music, the lights and the roar of the audience are elements that make me feel capable of anything. This rush of adrenaline is incredibly addictive. I don’t ever want to stop feeling these emotions. But it is serenity that brings me to where I’m at right now. An amazing emotional place of comprehension, reflection and enlightenment. At this moment I’m feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share.
Many people told me: “Ricky it’s not important”, “it’s not worth it”, “all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse”, “many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature”. Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions…”
From Associated Content:
Ricky Martin has long dealt with rumors about his sexual preferences. Usually when there is long standing speculation about a celebrity’s sexual preferences that is not irrefutably denied, the innuendo ultimately proves to be true. No, that doesn’t mean Tom Cruise is gay necessarily; it’s not a perfect system. But by and large when speculation like this runs rampant for years, there is generally truth behind it.
Good for Ricky Martin that he feels liberated and brave enough to come out of the closet, as he did today by tweeting about the fact that yes he is in fact, a homosexual. And good for America that besides it being a noteworthy story for a little while, in the end it won’t really matter to anybody.
