At Least 100 Nevadans Don’t Hate Sen. Harry Reid… Dingy Harry’s Campaign Bus Tour Fizzling, Despite Mysterious 10-Cent Coffee Offer at Searchlight Tea Party

Posted By on April 5, 2010

Pitiful.

Only about 100 people showed up to support doomed Sen. Harry Reid on the first of three days of bus campaigning… looks like his reelection campaign is already fizzling like a soggy campfire site in the path of an afternoon shower.

From Nevada Appeal, Sen. Reid starts campaign bus tour across Nevada:

LAS VEGAS (AP) — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told hometown supporters Monday that Congress has worked to turn around the economy, and that projects like installing “smart grid” utility infrastructure will generate jobs and make Nevada an energy powerhouse.

“You can’t escape who you are. My roots are here and no one can take that away from me,” Reid told a crowd of more than 100 cheering friends and supporters inside the Searchlight Nugget casino, about 60 miles south of Las Vegas.

Nevada’s Democratic senator spoke at the start of a three-day campaign bus tour through the state he has represented since 1986. Reid calls it his “Driving Nevada Forward” tour and says he plans to discuss issues including jobs, energy and health care.

His “smart grid” reference was to a $138 million federal stimulus grant Nevada’s main electric utility received in October to help create a network of two-way meters that exchange real-time information between the company and customers about the cost and use of energy.

Reid dismissed Republican criticisms that the health care reform law he helped push through the Senate amounts to the federal takeover of health care. Reid said he expects the measure will reduce the national debt by $1.3 trillion over the next 20 years.

Reid faces four little-known Democrats in the June 8 primary. He’s expected to then face one of a record 12 GOP challengers and several possible independent candidates in November.

He spoke Monday not far from where the conservative Tea Party Express drew more than 9,000 people for a March 27 rally against federal spending, the health care overhaul, rising taxes, big government and Reid.

Reid took a swipe at the headliner of that event — former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. He used her trademark “you betcha,” and said he couldn’t have written his whole speech on his hand.

Palin has been mocked for referring to notes written on her hand during a February speech to a tea party convention.

Republican National Committee spokesman Jahan Wilcox released a statement Monday blaming Reid for rising state unemployment and saying Reid “has driven Nevada into a ditch.”

[...]

Las Vegas businessman Scott Ashjian, a former Republican, has registered to run under the Tea Party of Nevada banner but the Tea Party movement has denounced him and he’s facing legal action to get his name removed from the ballot.

Psst… Harry, slamming Sarah Palin like that isn’t prudent nor savvy. She’s not running against you, and surveys have shown that a majority of voters in Nevada think more highly of her than they do of you. Of the 100 folks at the rally, how many exactly were members of Reid’s family, friends of the family, and legitimate supporters?

And were there any eggs in the crowd?

From Nice Deb, Harry Reid Kicks Off Campaign Tour In Searchlight To A Crowd of Approximately 100:

Dingy also took the occasion to mock Sarah Palin, although Allahpundit reports that his jibes weren’t as nasty as they usually are.

…maybe, like most people who are facing doom, he’s mellowing a bit as the end approaches.

This next one’s from a Nevada newspaper… read the last paragraph:

From Las Vegas Review-Journal, Reid campaign bus fueled and packed:

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, his approval ratings in the basement and a Republican Party bulls-eye on his back, on Monday plans to formally launch what could be his last re-election campaign with a three-day bus tour of Nevada that starts where he began: in his hometown of Searchlight.

[...]

Yet Reid, ever the fighter who has won close elections before, takes the challenge in stride. He welcomed some 10,000 Tea Party movement supporters to Searchlight on March 27 for an anti-Reid rally by inviting them to have a 10-cent cup of coffee at the Searchlight Nugget. And he has brushed aside the idea that his political career is coming to an end anytime soon.

HE OFFERED 10-CENT CUPS OF COFFEE TO 10,000-PLUS TEA PARTY SUPPORTERS??? Good grief, when on earth did that happen?

Where was this wacky “news” item buried in the news stream and how did Sen. Reid notify the thousands of tea partiers who attended the Searchlight tea party on March 27? How did Harry manage to fit in a cup of java in with his second appearance at the fourth grand opening of the Clark County shooting range? Or were tea partiers just suppose to show up at the Searchlight Nugget and say, “Hey, Harry sent me.”

Pitiful and suspicious… sorry, Harry, offering to buy your angry Nevadan constituents a cheap cup of coffee (but not publicizing it much, if at all) isn’t going to undo the unforgivable damage you and the Democrat party have done to this country. And it’s insulting and clueless of you to have thought it would.

But at least 100 people don’t agree with me.
