Uncomfortable New Tiger Woods Ad for Nike… Voiceover of His Late Father (video)

I’ve been a classic film buff for decades, and usually appreciate and embrace current commercials that use black-and-white film. This new Nike ad, using golf’s Tiger Woods’ dead father Earl’s voice, asking, “Did you learn anything?” while Tiger silently stares into the camera, just made me feel uncomfortable.
Instead of making an “artsy” statement, the ad left me feeling a bit creeped out. And empty.
This is the first commercial Tiger has made since his disgraceful philandering with other women was made public last year, and after his public apology in a press conference to his wife Elin Woods, his children, and his fans for his rampant adultery. And right after information about ANOTHER affair (reportedly this is Number 17) Tiger had with a neighbor’s daughter has been made known.

Good morning. Let’s start with the new controversial Tiger Woods Nike ad, since he finally starts playing golf again today. It features the voice of his deceased dad, Earl Woods. Tiger says nothing.
Words popping up to describe the ad include “strange,” “creepy,” “sad,” “bizarre” and “uncomfortable.” But ad expert Donny Deutsch raved about it this morning on Today, calling it “brilliant.”

In what has to be one of the oddest ads in the history of television, Nike debuted Wednesday night a creepy, 30-second Tiger Woods commercial that features the fallen sports star solemnly staring at the camera while listening to a grim voiceover of his dead dad, the New York Post reported Thursday.
In a telling sign of how badly bruised the golf great’s image remains, Madison Avenue’s onetime wunderkind keeps mute throughout the commercial.
Instead, the voice of Earl Woods — who died in 2006 — is summoned from beyond the grave to quiz his skirt-chasing son.
“Tiger, I am more prone to be inquisitive,” his father begins the commercial, which is shot in black and white. “I want to find out what your thinking was. I want to find out what your feelings are.”
Then he poses the question his son was surely asked in sex rehab. “And did you learn anything?” he asked.
The golfer seems on the verge of tears, blinking his famously wandering eyes several times. The ad ends with the camera silently fading to a Nike emblem. It was not clear how Nike produced the audio.

A controversial new Tiger Woods Nike commercial is causing a stir around the nation’s airwaves and search engines, and it comes only a day after his neighbor’s daughter revealed an alleged affair with the golfer that took place in Woods’ home.
The ad is particularly offensive given the circumstances. It features a black-and-white close-up of Woods’ face as his father, Earl Woods – who passed away a few years back – provides a voice over asking Tiger how he’s feeling and if he’s learned anything.
So what’s the offensive part? How about the fact that Woods has turned his dead father and, more disgustingly, his infidelity and sexual addiction into profit, airing the commercial for the sports conglomerate just days after holding a supposedly genuine press conference in which he hoped to put the troubles behind him.
Here’s the thing: Woods can’t tell people the details of his accident and marriage are private between he and his wife and then air a commercial capitalizing on the situation. If he wants things to remain private, fine: Don’t make the commercial.
