Grain of Salt: Team Obama’s Food Police Now Attacking Salt in Processed Foods

Posted By on April 21, 2010

Latest from Team Obama's Food Police power-grabs... FDA wants to regulate salt in processed foods - how long before they regulate salt in American homes?

Once the Obama administration has finished up with its insufferable nanny-state food regulations for Americans, all that will be left for approved consumption will be organic arugula, soy milk, rutabagas, and wheat germ.

And maybe hamburgers. It’s no secret how much POTUS and FLOTUS love their meat juices-dripping cheeseburgers. And don’t forget the Dijon mustard.

Any takers on there soon being a new “sin tax” on salt levied by the nanny-state Obama administration on Americans?

From Washington Post, FDA plans to limit amount of salt allowed in processed foods for health reasons:

The Food and Drug Administration is planning an unprecedented effort to gradually reduce the salt consumed each day by Americans, saying that less sodium in everything from soup to nuts would prevent thousands of deaths from hypertension and heart disease. The initiative, to be launched this year, would eventually lead to the first legal limits on the amount of salt allowed in food products.

The government intends to work with the food industry and health experts to reduce sodium gradually over a period of years to adjust the American palate to a less salty diet, according to FDA sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the initiative had not been formally announced.

Officials have not determined the salt limits. In a complicated undertaking, the FDA would analyze the salt in spaghetti sauces, breads and thousands of other products that make up the $600 billion food and beverage market, sources said. Working with food manufacturers, the government would set limits for salt in these categories, designed to gradually ratchet down sodium consumption. The changes would be calibrated so that consumers barely notice the modification.

The legal limits would be open to public comment, but administration officials do not think they need additional authority from Congress.

[...]

Morton Satin, director for technical and regulatory affairs at the Salt Institute, which represents salt producers, said regulation “would be a disaster for the public.” He said that the science regarding sodium is unclear and that consumption does not necessarily lead to health problems.

Before a few of you start nodding your “big government loves me” bobble heads in agreement, be aware that there is no science to back up this salt regulation. In fact, per an Einstein University study, no- and low-sodium diets are linked to earlier deaths.

Curses on that pesky science…

From Right Pundits, FDA Salt Regulation: No Salt For You!:

The FDA, or you can call them “Mommy”, will be forcing working with the food industry to lower salt slowly, like how you want band-aids removed. It’s all in an effort to get those naughty Americans to stop making decisions for themselves and start doing what Mommy says by sheer force.

Your sweat tea is next.

Americans are reportedly consuming twice what the government recommends. And government doesn’t like it. The FDA says the move is to help prevent deaths from hypertension and heart disease.

However, an extensive study in 2008 by the Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University found a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease in people consuming lower sodium diets, not higher.

[...]

After factoring in risk factors like smoking, diabetes and blood pressure, the sample of individuals with the lowest sodium diet were 80% more likely to die from cardiovascular disease. In fact, no- and low-salt consumers were 24% more likely to die from any cause.

In other words, salt might save your life. But in the meantime, the FDA might inadvertently kill you.

Salt is necessary for life. It is found in every human fluid, like our blood and sweat and tears. It’s necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses, hydration, pH levels, absorption of minerals, digestion, insulin balance, to fight infections, to clean wounds, essential for the aging and the pregnant, necessary to fight off iodine deficiency, etc, etc. It’s also very tasty.

From Hot Air, Great news: FDA to regulate salt in processed foods:

The FDA has never interjected itself into the recipes of prepared foods. Instead, they have enforced full disclosure on labels, allowing consumers to select the healthiest options for themselves if they wish. Why the change? The FDA says we can’t choose for ourselves:

Until now, the government has pushed the food industry to voluntarily reduce salt and tried to educate consumers about the dangers of excessive sodium. But in a study to be released Wednesday, an expert panel convened by the Institute of Medicine concludes that those measures have failed. The panel will recommend that the government take action, according to sources familiar with the findings.

Of course they will! But there’s just one little problem. According to the latest research, sodium intake isn’t really a health problem for normal adults. An Einstein University study in 2008 showed no connection between cardiovascular disease risk and higher-sodium diets.

From Moe Lane, RedState, The Democrats’ War on Bacon. Salt, too:

Let me just add my name to the list of people visibly itching to bounce a salt shaker off of the FDA’s collective forehead…

…because, of course, the FDA has nothing better to do with its time. Look, I understand that the nanny-state Left doesn’t trust its own judgment and ability to make informed decisions, and that’s fine. In fact, I agree with them: I don’t trust their judgment or ability to make informed decisions, either. But why do they insist on trying to interfere with my judgment or ability to make informed decisions? – Aside from them generally being annoying neo-Puritan gloom-magnets, of course.

From The Lonely Conservative, FDA to Make Food Taste Worse, Spoil Faster:

Salt is the latest target of the federal government. Yes, salt. A natural substance used for centuries to preserve food while enhancing flavor is the newest “crisis” that must be addressed by government bureaucrats.

[...]

Expect food to start tasting worse and spoiling faster.

From Legal Insurrection, The Upside Of Salt Regulation – Job Creation:

Will the law also prohibit people from adding salt to their under-salted processed foods? Can the salt police be far behind?

Would that be too much of a slippery slope too?

Of course, by hiring salt police we also would create jobs! Finally, the Obama administration has a jobs plan.

From an earlier Legal Insurrection post, Leave Our Salt Alone

Behold a proposal by a Democratic New York Assemblyman to ban restaurants from using salt in cooking:

“No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises,” the bill, A. 10129, states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

Don’t think that once the newly created government bureaucracies under Obamacare start passing regulations they won’t tell you how to live?

Then you haven’t been paying attention.

Update: And then they came for the pizza.

This is really nice post. I am going to certainly come back extra often.

I salt everything, except maybe ice cream and other desserts. This administration is on the ultimate ego trip. Where do they get off telling us what we cna and can not eat? Adolph Obama – Karl Obama – Saul Obama. I’m so fed up with The Messia I want to rip my hair out. Is it 2012 yet?

  3. ronhohn says:

Have you people ever considered that some, especially elderly people, are on a low sodium or even no-sodium diet?
Have you ever considered that it is much easier to add salt to your liking than to remove it to help keep your blood pressure down?
Or are all of you a bunch of inconsiderate selfish slobs?

    My guess is the latter.

    • admin says:

Yep, that’s me – a selfish slob who doesn’t want the government ruling my life and what I choose to eat. But you can embrace it with your government-approved sheep mindset – most liberals prefer that the government does their thinking for them. Fewer anxieties. Next thing they’ll be wanting to monitor is fat, meats, and sugars… soy burgers for all, yum.

As far as senior citizens go, I’m guessing you’re not there yet. My 84-year-old mother-in-law doesn’t trust the government to know what’s best for her, either. Wants to make her own decisions – she thinks Obama is the biggest jerk to have ever hit the White House. Yep, call her a selfish slob, too.

Peanuts cause some people to die from allergic reaction – let’s ban those.
Shellfish also causes allergic reactions for some people – let’s ban that as well.
I’m sure we can figure out a way for the government to regulate everything in everyone’s lives… which is precisely what liberals dream of.

      • ronhohn says:

Do you have a problem with the FDA too?

Yes I am there – I am 74 and need to watch my salt intake.

You did not address the fact that the government is NOT restricting your salt intake – salt shakers are provided at most places where food is sold. They are advising you you should not eat too much salt, they are saying to cut back on it at the point of sale.

As I said above, it is easier to add salt than to remove it.

      • admin says:

It’s called “gradualism.” And you obviously didn’t read the Einstein study.

There is a tremendous amount of dispute about the health/harm of salt intake. Salt adds flavor to foods, and without it, we would die. It’s just more government regulation and infiltration… and this is just the beginning. With ObamaCare, many more things that affect free choice will be banned, regulated, or a “sin tax” slapped on it. Even if I hated eating salt, I would oppose this. Gradualism starts on small things, and works itself up.

  4. ronhohn says:

Vicki McClure Davidson stated above: “God bless America’.
Now just about everybody says it, and I became a US citizen in 1959, and I have never said those words to anyone, because I have no idea what they purport to mean.
    1. Do they DEMAND that god bless America?
    2. Do they beg god to bless America? Then it should be “God please bless America”
    3. Do they mean that god is actually blessing America? Then it should say “God blesses (or is blessing) America, of which there is no evidence, unless blessings consist of hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, mudslides, floods and oil leaks.

    I am really curious.

    • admin says:

Sigh. You’re really bored today, right?

Ronhohn, if indeed your questions were sincere (but they aren’t, we both know that), I’d work up a thought-provoking response, an expository essay just for you based on my faith. But since you’re obviously a bored, mentally challenged troll with nothing of value to do on a beautiful Saturday, let’s do this to the truncation of “God Bless America”. This is my intent as a Christian: I desire God to bless my family, I desire God to bless our troops, I desire God to bless America, I desire God to bless even you. I can’t speak for others as to what their intent is, but that is mine.

As with so many colloquialisms in our language (such as when teen boys say “sweet” and drawl the word out in a bass tone, they don’t actually mean that something literally tastes sweet or smells sweet, but that the object of the observation is really cool, and they don’t mean temperature), many are metaphorical, figurative, casual, ungrammatical. You’re being obtuse, argumentative, and/or foolish. Or you’re struggling with grasping the basics of the language of the country you’ve been a citizen of for 50-plus years.

My vote is for obtuse. Consider going outside and rake some leaves to clear your befuddled head.

Oh, and since you’ve obviously read the rules for posting… I let the first snotty insult slide in your previous post since it is indeed a beautiful day and I was being generous – thought you were a trolling one-hit blunder. However, attempting to mock my religion and acting like a statist fool puts you in the proverbial corner, Ronhohn. You’re now banned, buttercup – my blog, my rules… LOL. Don’t waste your time composing a nasty, name-calling, anti-conservative/anti-Christian response (although you will do it – you won’t be able to resist it – trolls are like pigs at a trough). I won’t read it, will delete it, you’ll get no childish satisfaction from it – I’m being forthright and honest with you. I’ve had more hate and rage dumped on me by liberal trolls in a single day than you could survive in a year. You’re a small fry annoyance, a flea… like I said earlier, go out and enjoy the day. Life’s too short to be frittering your time trolling conservative websites, hoping someone will give you a smidgen of desperate attention. Or, go camp out at Daily Kos. They love liberal trolls who mock religions over there… just don’t mock Muslims, OK? Could be more than you bargained for…

Again, please don’t waste your time with composing a response. You’re banned, Ronny boy. Your response will be deleted by the software unread… but you won’t be able to stop yourself.

      God bless you.
