Another film legend has passed away. The incomparable Lynn Redgrave lost her brave seven-year battle to breast cancer and passed away yesterday at her home in Connecticut.

May this courageous, talented woman be an inspiration to others and may she rest in peace.

From Deadline.com, R.I.P. Lynn Redgrave:

Actress Lynn Redgrave died last night after a seven-year battle with breast cancer. She was 67. Redgrave, member of the famous acting dynasty, burst into the scene in 1966 with Georgy Girl, which earned her one of two Oscar nominations. The other one came 32 years later for Gods And Monsters. Redgrave ended her classy career on television, appearing on Desperate Housewives, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Ugly Betty. Redgrave’s death comes a year after her niece Natasha Richardson died after a skiing accident and a month after the death of her older brother, Corin Redgrave.

From New York Times, Lynn Redgrave, 67, Is Dead:

Lynn Redgrave, the theater, film and television actress and scion of the Redgrave acting clan, has died. She was 67. The death was confirmed by her publicist, Rick Miramontez, who said that Ms. Redgrave died Sunday night at her home in Kent, Conn. A cause of death was not immediately given.

Ms. Redgrave, the daughter of Sir Michael Redgrave and sister of Vanessa Redgrave, recently presented her autobiographical one-woman show “Nightingale” at the Manhattan Theater Club. In an interview with The New York Times she said that the piece had come to her in the clarity she found after undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy for breast cancer in 2003. During preparations for the show Ms. Redgrave said she had undergone treatment at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and that her cancer was Stage IV, meaning that it had spread to other organs.

From TV Guide, Actress Lynn Redgrave Dies at 67:

The actress died Sunday night at her Connecticut home, her publicist Rick Miramontez said. She was treated for breast cancer in 2003.

“Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven-year journey with breast cancer,” Redgrave’s children — Ben, Pema and Annabel — said in a statement Monday. “She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives.”

From New York Post, Lynn Redgrave (1943-2010):

The great Lynn Redgrave received her first Oscar nominations for Silvio Narizanno’s “Georgy Girl” (1966), memorably playing a chubby girl described as an “ugly duckling” who married man James Mason pursues as his mistress. She was also nominated for James Condon’s “Gods and Monsters” (1998) as director James Whale’s (Ian McKellen) severe housekeeper.

Redgrave worked extensively in theater and on TV, including as Weight Watchers’ first celebrity spokesperson. Her death, at a way too young 67, announced today by her children following a battle with breast cancer, follows by less than a month that of her older brother Corin. Their surviving sister, the great Vanessa, lost her daughter, Natasha Richardson, a year ago. Condolences to her family.

From Los Angeles Times, Lynn Redgrave was robbed of the Oscar for ‘Georgy Girl’:

Looking back over the distinguished work of Lynn Redgrave — who died of breast cancer Sunday at age 67 — there was one outrage in terms of showbiz awards. It’s a pity she didn’t win the Academy Award for her career-capping performance as a chunky British misfit in “Georgy Girl.”

The New York Times cheered her for being “funny as Judy Holliday in ‘Born Yesterday,’ touching as Julie Harris in ‘Member of the Wedding.’ ” Of course, Holliday had won the Oscar for “Born Yesterday” and Harris had been nominated. Redgrave got nominated for “Georgy Girl” too, but she faced a bizarre contest for best actress at the 1966 Oscars. She was pitted against her sister Vanessa (“Morgan”). Both lost to a worthy foe: Elizabeth Taylor in the greatest performance of her career — “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

Voters at the New York Film Critics Circle came up with a much better solution than the Oscars. They declared the best-actress race a tie between Taylor and Lynn Redgrave, but only after six fierce ballots that flip-flopped back and forth between each actress taking the lead. On awards night, Redgrave showed up to accept her plaque; Taylor didn’t.

For “Georgy Girl,” Redgrave also won the Golden Globe as best musical-comedy actress. (Taylor competed in the separate race for drama actresses, losing to Anouk Aimée for “A Man and a Woman.”)
