Mark Steyn — respected conservative writer, historical and political commentator, and cultural critic, as well as frequent guest host on Rush Limbaugh’s radio talk show — discusses in the video interview below the contents of his alarming new book: America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It. He examines the societal transformations that have occurred in Europe over the past few decades with the rise in Muslims, and how this translates to the United States’ own cultural and political transformation. Steyn expertly explains in this interview with Hoover fellow Peter Robinson on Uncommon Knowledge, after breaking down the numbers, why they spell doom for the Western world.

Not mincing words, Steyn cites Muslim vs. other nations’ birth rates, welfare states, economics, religion, education (especially the teaching/revision of history), the weakness of societal culture, immigration, the United Nations, and socialized health care. He uses the recent censorship of South Park in depicting the Islam prophet Muhammad, the mandates of the Democrat Party to perpetuate adolescence, and other troubling current events to illustrate the changes going on now because of the increase in radical Islam.

One interesting point Steyn makes is that Germany, thanks to the US military being stationed in Germany for the past six decades, can use its national defense budget to fund not its armies, but its socialized health care system. Thus, Americans are currently and have been paying for Germany’s government-run health care for a very long time.

Despite his initial concerns about the results of the 2008 presidential election, Steyn still has faith in Americans to not “go down the European path.” He embraces the resulting tea party protests that have sprung up across the nation to fight against the encroachment of federal government.
