Mega Millions Lottery Win in Pico Rivera, California: $266 Million
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on May 5, 2010
There’s an enormous lottery win in the small city of Pico Rivera, California. A ticket worth $266 million was sold… or the amount of money that our government spends in the time that it takes for a hummingbird to flap its wings twice.
I felt compelled to post this information about the lottery because I lived in Pico Rivera when I was a kid. I attended Durfee Elementary School until third grade when my family moved, and I recall that we lived in a small, weirdly pink house (hopefully, it’s no longer pink) with a huge tree in the front yard. One bathroom, five kids… no wonder we moved.
Lots of great memories, as it was one of those middle-class 1960s neighborhoods that was teeming with packs of kids of all sizes, colors, and shapes. I learned to ride a bike, held my first snake, owned my first transistor radio, and watched the debut showing of my favorite TV show at the time, Bewitched, in Pico Rivera. I even still remember our phone number at the Pico Rivera house: back when words were used to replace the first two numbers in the phone’s prefix, it was Oxford-91706.
Hope someone from the old neighborhood who really needs the money won the Mega Millions.
From Daily Bulletin, $266 million Mega Millions ticket sold in Pico Rivera:
A Mega Millions ticket sold at a barbecue joint in Pico Rivera is worth $266 million.
California Lottery officials say the ticket matched all six numbers Tuesday. It was sold at L & L Hawaiian BBQ on Washington Boulevard. The winner has not come forward.
The numbers drawn Tuesday night were 21, 9, 35, 43, 31 and the Mega number was 8.
The $266 million jackpot is the eighth-largest in the history of the game, which began in 2002.
Owners of L & L Hawaiian BBQ will receive the maximum retailer bonus of $1 million.

UPDATE… Alas, the winner wasn’t from Pico Rivera, just the ticket that was sold.
This info is just coming in from Mercury News: TV news employee in LA has $266M winning ticket:
LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles TV station KNBC says one of its newsroom employees is holding the Mega Millions lottery ticket worth $266 million.
Assignment manager David Reese says the newly-minted millionaire works as a freelancer on the assignment desk and called him Wednesday to share her good news.
Reese says the woman wants to maintain her privacy and asked her colleagues to keep her name a secret. She hasn’t claimed her ticket yet.
He says the woman, whose husband was laid off from his job two weeks ago, told him she plans to come to work Thursday.
The winning ticket was sold at a barbecue restaurant in Pico Rivera.
Lottery officials say the odds of matching all six numbers drawn in Tuesday’s multistate game is 1 in more than 175 million.

Darn. I just bought my first-ever Mega-Millions ticket this week. Guess I wasn’t the lucky one. (sniffle) Hopefully the winner will be smart enough to get the heck out of California before claiming the jackpot, find a state with no income tax, or California is likely to confiscate the winnings to bail out their budget!
Must be interesting to see your home town suddenly in the spotlight!
Isn’t it funny how we can remember so much detail from the time we were so young? I grew up in the San Francisco area… had one of those telephone numbers too, Regent-92286, LOL! The phone was scarlet red and I had to stand on a chair in the kitchen to use it. I can still see myself standing on that chair repeatedly calling the timekeeper just to listen to the recordings and count the seconds along with the voice! Silly kid!
LOl – I had totally forgotten that you could call for the time! Yeppers, I did that, too (A LOT!), and I think I had to stand on a chair to reach the rotary dial as well. But our phone was black (wall unit in the kitchen), not a fancy-schmancy red one like yours, Marilyn!
It’s wild how we both remember our telephone numbers as kids. It’s not like we actually called home all that often. Memory sure is a capricious thing…
sigh i’m not the winner either
Me either.
