Sweet Frozen Frugal Delights: Sonic Introduces Real Ice Cream, Fab Summer Shake Special — Buy 1, Get 2nd Shake Free (video)
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on May 20, 2010
Summer (and school summer vacation) is almost here, and Sonic has ice cream news and the launch of its fab summer shake special.
I’ve been a huge fan of Sonic’s for years — it’s always been, IMO, thrift-minded and family-friendly. Now, it has just made summer that much better and affordable for those of us on tight budgets.
Sonic’s press release… SONIC Keeps It Real This Summer with the Introduction of Real Ice Cream:
As temperatures start to rise and the lazy days of summer approach, SONIC®, America’s Drive-In®, serves up cool treats with the introduction of Real Ice Cream. SONIC has taken its delicious soft serve and made it even creamier and more indulgent with the introduction of Real Ice Cream.
“For years, customers have enjoyed the Frozen Favorites® treats on our menu. From shakes to blasts to sundaes, people love to visit Sonic to celebrate the return of warm weather with a frozen dessert,” said Dominic Losacco, vice president of marketing for SONIC. “Strengthening our frozen lineup with the addition of Real Ice Cream is just one more way SONIC adapts our menu to appeal to customers’ tastes and preferences.”
In addition to launching Real Ice Cream, SONIC has improved many of the toppings of the most popular Frozen Favorites® desserts, including chocolate, hot fudge, caramel and pineapple. These quality improvements include removing or reducing high fructose corn syrup and replacing it with more natural ingredients.
Some great 2010 summer specials have just launched at Sonic… I’m jazzed about this one — more from the press release…
SONIC is also putting the boom in summer fun with its Buy One Shake, Get Another Shake Free:
Anytime promotion from May 17 to June 27! For six weeks, when SONIC customers order a shake they can enjoy a second shake for free when ordering or on a future visit.
And, to further celebrate summer, SONIC will be offering 99-cent Real Ice Cream single topping sundaes after 8 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
These are a few of my favorite Sonic commercials from a while back.

Great posts over the last few days!
I really enjoyed Sonic’s add campaign with the people in the car(s) talking craziness. They don’t seem to be using them at the moment. Hope they bring them back. Pretty good food, too.
Thanks for these ads, especially the National Airlines–that was cool!
Thanks, Larry – with all that’s going on with the government & the illegal alien law in AZ, I thought we needed a bit of a break – I know I did – some levity to give us a bit of breathing room to charge forward again tomorrow.
Just like you, I get a real kick out of those two guys in the Sonic ads, too – the husband/wife duo usually annoy me, but the two guys are classic (“Cheap Date” is my Number 1 favorite). I haven’t seen any new ones on TV, either – perhaps they’re using different marketing now. Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the vintage travel ad… it was unrelated to Sonic, but made me think of summer, and the go-go dancing was just too hilarious to not share.
I agree, we need a break here and there to laugh. Really, thanks!
Yeah, Cheap Date is great.
I do not like the ice cream at Sonic. Please bring back the other ice cream. The new ice cream is not smooth.
What Ice Cream? Sonic is still serving the same “soft serve” product as always. Dairy Queen has been serving a much better and tasiter “soft serve” for decades without ever trying to claim it was “ice cream”. These ads are blatantly false!
