Next Monday, the last Monday in the month of May, will be the US federal holiday Memorial Day.

Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was expanded to honor other fallen soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen after World War I.

For some Americans who take freedom for granted or have a lack of interest in US history, it’s just a day off from work with pay, a break from tedium to be spent at the pool or BBQ. But for many other Americans, it’s an important observance to honor the memories of all the countless men and women in our military who selflessly gave their lives in the name of freedom for our country and others.

God bless our troops, and God bless America.

In honor of this upcoming Memorial Day, here’s a selection of videos paying tribute to our fallen heroes and to our courageous troops currently serving.

This first is footage from last year’s Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concert in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas (decent quality, considering the footage was shot with a cell phone by a Texas attendee).

In this video, Billy Ray Cyrus sings “Some Gave All” with clips of our courageous troops. Inspirational and emotional.

Evidently Obama will be out of town on Memorial Day.
Personally, if I had been laid down for my eternal rest in Arlington Cemetery, I would rather have someone else place the wreath. Someone who understands Honor and Duty.
Maybe an Admiral, or a General, or a Private,… but not Obama.

    Great post Vicki.

      AFVET,

I’ve done some research, and Obama will be participating in a Memorial Day tribute in the Chicago area — Crazy Uncle Joe and his wife will be participating in the wreath ceremony at Arlington.

As much as I want to bash Obama on going on vacation, he isn’t the first to delegate the responsibility at Arlington to a VP. And as long as POTUS does indeed honor our fallen soldiers SOMEWHERE — it doesn’t have to be Arlington — then good. But we’ll see what happens in Illinois… he’s not off the hook yet, considering his track record with our military. Color me skeptical…

To all you vets out there: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. God Bless all our troops. On Memorial Day, I always go to visit my Dad (WWII Vet and ESCAPED POW!) at his final resting place. I hope we all tale at least a few minutes sometime this weekend to remember the sacrifices they made and keep them all in our prayers
